I've been a horror fan for my entire life and always try to watch my horror alone and in the dark but they still rarely even spook me anymore. But a few years ago I realized that playing horror games scares me the way the movies did when I was a kid. In fact they're worse, there are lots of games I would like to play but I don't have the guts

When I was a kid I remember seeing nightmares after watching Alien/Aliens or Nightmare on Elm Street at my friend's house. For a long time I did not care for horror at all. As a grown up I've learned to enjoy these and other 1970-1990 horror in general, but I still don't like modern horror at all because I find it too scary (and it relies on CGI). Other reason is that I just love these time capsules from few decades ago.

It's not censored. It is shorter compared to the US release (~140+ min) because Kubrick himself made edits to it. It was possibly after initial lukewarm audience response in the US, prior to its release in other territories. Depending on your view, the cuts either remove important character development or make the film more streamlined.

Hello from the UK; until a few years ago when my local cinema showed the US cut I had only known the European version on VHS, DVD and then Blu over the years. I have to say I am in the camp that agrees the more streamlined European version is superior; the rhythm and pacing feel perfect. The US cut is an interesting curio (I enjoyed seeing the extra footage) but some scenes can be just a little too drawn out in my opinion. I'm glad fans have easy access to whichever version they prefer.

This sounds like you're amazed that anyone who saw the movie in its original release could still be alive...

As I already said I'm a bit jealous.

But saying there's no point to watching a horror film if you don't get scared is idiotic.

btw~ I made a mistake...the saying is "It's only a movie"
Perhaps you don't know the history of horror trailers
I'm always jealous too. Once you grow up and realize there's no such thing as the supernatural, especially, being truly frightened by a horror movie is difficult. If it's a horror movie with real-life elements, I find the most I might even have to offer to that is being "disturbed". I still love horror films, though. Maybe we're the crazy ones.

Noooooo

It doesn't imply that.

It clearly implies that it's cooler and brag-worthy to be able to say "I first saw it in it's original theatrical release" vs saying you saw it after you were already a fan and watched it at some Hollywood theater in 2007 or some sh!t.

I'm not impressed or jealous with anybody seeing this in a theater today.

I'm jealous of people who saw it in 1980

Ha, I certainly didn't take it that way. And I'm like you - I envy anyone who had the opportunity to see the first run of so many amazing films. 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia are two at the top of my time machine list.

I got to see Jaws and Star Wars at the cinema when I was still a kid which was nice, Jaws literally made me not get in the ocean for a few years. The summer after graduating high school I saw Tron, ET, Poltergeist and I think later that year saw Blade Runner and The Thing. But it was Jaws and Star wars as a kid that got me hooked

The Exorcist still creeps me out to this day

You graduated the year I was born. That's cool. 1982 was a good year for film for sure.

I saw The Thing (starring Kurt Russell and Keith David) opening weekend.

It was the first movie I saw NOT sitting with my family.

I saw it with my friend Carmine, who is now directing Keith David in his own movie, American Dresser. I did the logo and merch designing.

Any psychologist will tell you that the fear center of the brain can't distinguish fantasy from reality. Why else are so many people scared to death watching news stories that don't present any immediate danger to them? I don't see horror movies any differently. Unless a bear is running at you, there is no reason to be scared, yet 99% of fear out there has no connection with reality whatsoever.

Wow that is cool!

Yeah I got the Shout release last fall can't wait to watch it again this fall. I was trying to remember what time of the year it was when it released in 1982, I saw 5 classics tho in a 6 month time span I'm pretty sure.

Well, these new horror movies today, that keep insisting on trying to scare us with "scary children" has to stop.

Kids aren't scary! I can beat the crap out of any kid!

Kids used in horror movies might be creepy or disturbing, but that's not frightening.

And don't go using The Shining against me just because I said that... Because the child, Danny, in The Shining, isn't used as a character who is going to get me or kill me. He's used as a plot device to create the narrative.

I don't believe in the supernatural either and that has nothing to do with it. Film is a medium which manipulates emotions, you could just as well say that you don't find comedies funny because they are fiction. In the end it has nothing to do with not being able to tell fiction from reality. People who are more empathetic are more likely to find horror films scary, because they identify with the characters and situations more. Women are considered to be more empathetic than men, that's why they are likely to scare more. However men too differ in how empathetic they are from each other, people are wired up differently emotionally.

I had a buddy who passed away some years ago, he was a older fella. He would say, "99% of what I lived through never happened." That's always stuck with me
