[QUOTE=duneaholic;2197018]After listening to this sub for a few days and lots of movies I decided to finally open it up and look at the inside. I was surprised to see this....I mean I kinda knew it would be skimpy on polyfill but it was just a strip laying like this inside when I opened it.

This with the polyfill pulled out.

Wow Thats sad.. I guess I need to open mine up.. a nd Stuff it ....

Default Poly-fill

I'm wondering how much Poly-Fill I need to buy to fill one HD-sub 12? Also where is it located in Walmart? I think someone mentioned you want fire retardant Poly-fill?

Thanks,

Bill

I bought mine at Hobby Lobby but they have it at Wally World too. It's back in the arts and crafts area. I bought enough to do a queen sized quilt and did 3 subs with it. So you should be fine with enough to do a full size with some left over. It was around 10 bucks I think.

Usually, they are located in the fabric and craft department. Check the label and make sure it satisfies the fire codes for your State. You can also find polyfill at Michaels.

Add about 1/2 lb to 1 lb per one cubic feet of the subwoofer enclosure. One package is more than enough. Don't overfill the sub too tightly.

Thanks for the quick reply Big Daddy. Will I need to glue it in? It's kinda vague as to how much is enough and how much is too much. If I understand you correctly you want to fill the enclosure but not compress the Poly-Fill? Also is the Poly-Fill in sheets? If so I take it you cover the inside of the cube and then just crumple it up to fill the rest of the space? Do I need to make sure the port is open? If so how do you fill it without blocking the port off? I haven't looked at my sub in a while so I'm wondering do I just need a regular Phillips head screw driver to remove the driver?

Thanks again,

Bill

You cannot completely remove the driver as the wires are soldered to the driver and the amp. You need to be careful not to disconnect the wires.

Make sure the port is clear. Otherwise, the polyfill may pop out of the port during scenes with hard hitting bass.

Using a little bit of glue on a few spots on the inner surface is not a bad idea, but don't overdo it with the glue.

You can use either loose or sheet polyfill. The sheet polyfill is better for covering the inner walls. The loose type is better for stuffing the box. Buy either kind.

This is not exact science. You want to make sure the polyfill is not too tight and there is some room for breathing of the particles. If you don't put enough, it doesn't give you as much benefit and if you stuff it too tightly, it may hurt the performance.

EDIT:
Benefits of Polyfill are explained in the middle of Post #2 in the DIY Subwoofer/Speaker Building, Repairing, & Upgrading thread.

Ok I think I got it. So I should lightly glue some to all the inner surfaces and then fill it up to just below the port. I'll probably buy the sheet type if I can find it. Just sounds easier to work with. I presume for the fill part you want to crumple it up? Or does it work better to just fold it flat back and forth until you reach the height you want in the box? I remember you mentioning that the driver is soldered in. I presume it's just screwed in with regular screws?

Thanks,

Bill

We have three Wal-Marts close to our house and all three have both kinds. If you buy the sheet type, crumble it for stuffing the box, but not for the inner surface.

Ok thanks, I'm going to pick some up tomorrow. Probably I'm going to wait until I have someone to hold the driver while I stuff the box. Sounds like that will be easier.

On another note I think I found a great way to isolate my speakers. I found some really high density foam to put under the sub and my sansui's. The stuff is strong enough that I can't crush it standing on it. Yet it's still soft enough to provide dampening. It should improve the sound. I just couldn't see spending that much money on a SubDude. I guess time will tell. I'll do one thing at a time ans see how much it improves the sound. I'm guessing doing both is going to make a huge impact. I'm also planning on isolating the Energy's sitting on top of the Sansui's. I'll let you know how it all works out when I'm done.

Thanks for all the info,

Bill

With two people, it should be easier.

Build a riser yourself and put the foam under it. It should't cost you more than $15-$20. Check the DIY Risers thread.

or you can check out my quick tutorial from my gallery.

ive 'loosely' glued the polyfill together, giving it enough air to move around so to speak.

what you'd want to avoid is making the polyfill so compressed that it would act like a second layer inside the subwoofer, making it feel like a second layer of the enclosure, thus giving you less amount of air to move.

but thats just me.

seriously, you can find more details in my little gallery.

i never use glue with polyfill.
i just put the polyfill in the fox and then put the speaker back on.

this isnt rocket science and takes MAYBE 3 minutes and the 3 minutes includes taking off the speaker screws and putting them back on

I didn't use glue either, just VERY loosely filled it.

I just ripped up pieces to about baseball size and dropped it in till it was loosely packed. Seems to be pretty good to me

there is no exact science as to how you'd put polyfill in anyways, nor are there any details as to what to use, what not to use etc. the only thing that does count is that you do not overfill it, and follow the rule of thumb in regards to quantity.

Okay...I need to let the cat out of the bag. I bought a 10" Maple around April time frame and I'm just now using it tonight. (I was under the Big Daddy influence when I bought it). I'm not impressed however I have so much that I am trying to learn as far as settings go on my A/V system that I'm 99% sure it is due to a setting and lack of break in. I use to do car audio pretty seriously for SQ so I'm basing my old experiences on this. My 606 has more settings then I can poke a stick at.

I would think that it would blow out the rear port during really heavy bass?
