I'm just finished watching it, it was decent enough nothing to write home about. Defiantly preferred the tone of it to the two Angelina Jolie movies.

The movie screamed low budget to me in the way it was marketed, so based on that I would assume a low budget spent on marketing. Also who in their right mind would spend that great of a percentage of the production budget on marketing? That would be absolutely bonkers. You're suggesting they may have even spent more on marketing than on actually making the movie!
Which isn't uncommon. Blocbkbusters have spent $100 to even over $200 million on marketing.

If this was very well received a sequel would already be on the way. Given the ho hum reception they'd expect a sequel to do less. So a sequel is possible but not guaranteed.

Tomorrow, stay tuned.

Seriously though I thought this movie was wonderful and I'm gutted there won't be a sequel.

gutted too. it even sets up one. Insane that a 285 million WW gross movie will not even get a sequel. Just downright insanity. And it also only cost about 90 million. So it made 3 times its budget. Never seen a movie making this and not get a sequel.

I guess I wasn't expecting much given the critical drubbing and weak box-office that greeted this film earlier in the year, but I caught this on HBO this morning and enjoyed the hell out of it. An excitingly paced, unpretentious B-movie that worked like a good old-fashioned adventure serial. The action was fast and (blessedly) spatially coherent; none of that over-edited BS that renders so many action sequences a visual blur nowadays, and the climax felt like an Indiana Jones film done right.

I was pleasantly surprised at just how effective Alicia Vikander's Lara Croft was: so many Oscar-winning and nominated actors take on roles in action-fantasy and treat them as camp, but Vikander gives the part emotional weight and never acts like she's above it all and winking at the audience. I like Angelina Jolie, but her Lara Croft was such a combination of imperturbable cool and icy insouciance she was like nothing human (I'm sure it didn't help that I thought both of her Tomb Raider films were rubbish). Vikander is far more accessible, likable and vulnerable, and consequently comes across as far more relatable. That's not to say that the lithe and athletic Vikander isnt as brave, wily and badass as the role requires because she triumphs in those aspects as well. Kudos also to Walton Goggins, who provides the requisite menace and, like Vikander, doesn't let his performance slide into camp (it's a nice touch that as vile as he is, he's just working to get back to his family).

The twist at the end sets up a potential franchise quite nicely, it really is a shame we'll not get to see it. Still, I thought this movie delivered the goods and look forward to revisiting it.

Fear not. A sequel is in the works. With the aid of Ms. Vikander's voice talents, we'll be filming the sock puppet sequel this Spring.

This is one of only two films in my life where I've started watching and suddenly realised, "Life's too short for this.." and switched off the disc around the 10 minute mark. Prior to watching I was expecting to enjoy this quite a bit. It happens.

The prospect of this sequel as described terrifies me, though not as much as the thought of a third Angelina Jolie film that were to bring back the noxious Gerard Butler...

Sorry to hear this dgoswald, but I do have to ask: what was the other film?

Better off just watching the cut scenes from the games.

I demand a sequel!

Not that it's likely to happen but meh, a man can dream. I like the film plenty, and I thought Alicia Vikander was actually more interesting and charismatic than the incarnation of Lara that she's based on.

I’d give a sequel a try out. I did purchase this film and find it a decent watch. Could have been better obviously but could have been worse too. So yeah....bring it on.

If a (hypothetical) sequel could dispense all that dumb Trinity stuff and just make it more of Lara exploring s**t, I'd be down for it.

I loved the first game from 2013. If I'm ever bitten by the PC upgrade bug again, I'm getting a better GPU and definitely playing the two sequels. The first was practically a female Uncharted minus the jaunty tone, but it was such great fun.

A sequel just isn't going to happen if box office numbers are anything to go by. Shame.

I mean...

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
Budget: $115 Million
Worldwide Box Office: $274 Million

Tomb Raider (2018)
Budget: $94 Million
Worldwide Box Office: $275 Million

If you go by the original movie's numbers, the new movie did proportionally better, and the original movie got a sequel.

Dude, play the sequels! They're better than the reboot in pretty much every conceivable way.
