Please elaborate on what you mean by digital processing, as the very act of compressing it to HEVC is a heavy form of digital processing.

![]() Go back to Geoff's post on the previous page and look at his large screenshot that shows more detail (cowboy addressing the camera crew). If you can't see the heavy DNR artifacts I am referring to I can't help you. edit: and here is one from JP1 UHD with even more DNR: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/113892 |

I'm sorry but I do not consider pictures of a tv with a camera phone to be suitable evidence.
Anyway, concerning the JP1 screens: -There is a grain pattern in the shot. It's not Sony type grain, but it's there, and very fine as well. Some would probably argue that Sony levels of grain are excessive and not in keeping with a theatrical experience. -The UHD shot has a lot more detail and is much sharper than the BD shot. One need only to look at the headlights to see this, though there are other examples. Just because the grain is the softer variety doesn't mean it's lacking for resolved detail. -The old master however has edge enhancement which makes the grain and edges more pronounced in a rather unnatural way. This doesn't look "DNRed" to me at all (a term that has become so over used that it makes one wonder if people remember what a DNRed movie looks like from the early blu-ray days), rather it looks responsibly grain managed in a way that respects the integrity of the material without presenting an unnaturally noisy look. |

Universal just loves that DNR.
![]() I had hoped that Universal would leave DNR behind on the new format. Sadly that is not the case and that probably also means that when we get BTTF on UHD it will retain the horrible DNR! ![]() Last edited by kristoffer; 05-20-2018 at 05:48 AM. |

Actually, they were hard matted to ratios varying between 1.72:1 to 1.75:1, with two shots in 1.85:1. The VFX plates were shot on Vistavision, which has a native ratio of 16:10. But I think due to limited set extensions, overhead lights, matte boxes intruding within the frame, the final digital compositors cropped out those shots in varying aspect ratios, to throw rogue elements out of the frame. JP2 was printed hard matted to 1.85:1 for the entirety and JP3 had mix of 1.33:1 and 1.66:1.
As for the JP1, UHD BD, from what I've seen so far, it looks like the same ugly pink-toned and flat-looking image from the 2011 BD. The Vudu UHD on the other hand has the right, gorgeous colours. However, I will wait for the right HDR images to pass any personal judgement. Last edited by Riddhi2011; 05-20-2018 at 06:04 AM. |

It feels like so. It doesn't look like a fresh 4K scan from the negative, like JP2 does. As for the VUDU UHD, which looks very similar to the 3D BD, might just be an upscale from the final 2K 3D DCP master.
What about JP3? Can anyone please provide some screenshots of the UHD from their TV, so we can get a sense of the HDR colours? |

The VUDU UHD has an HDR10 grade, ergo, it is not simply an upscale of the 3D master, as HDR didn't exist when that was made (and there is no way Universal would pay for that to be graded in HDR when they have this UHD master done and headed to disc).
It's the same thing. |

Yup these look better than the old blu but still lots of dnr. Definitely would not pay a premium price for these.
