I did, with 2 requiring a clean first, but then played.

Not enough folk are considering that may need a new player. New disc encodings and disc manufacturing methods may require a player upgrade. So if you have a disc that doesn't play after cleaning, try taking it to a local electronics store to see if it plays on a brand new player on the floor.

When a brand new clean 4K disc doesn't play it's more than likely the fault of player not being new enough or the manufacture is slacking on firmware updates.

Yeah, you should have to buy a new player with each release. Shouldn't be the studio's requirement to get their heads out of their asses.

I had one issue with a disc in Season 2 (I think) where it froze but wiping the disc fixed it

In the case of Panasonic they haven't released new firmware in over a year. I believe LG and Sony are also going on a year with no updates. This includes the newest models that are still available for sale. When the three of them produce the vast majority of players, going out and buying a new player won't help unless your current player has a hardware defect.

It's a disc issue and not a player based problem, otherwise even replacement discs wouldn't work.

Was there an official replacement disc announcement, or any official statement about a problem?

All the discs in my set have played fine so far (halfway thru S3).

Not that I know of...
Same thing happened with me with the Star Wars movies, most of them came with minor scratches and one of them wouldn't play past 20 minutes. Got a new copy and that one worked fine.

All of my GoT discs came without scratches, and have played A-OK so far, so IDK what the fuss is about your SW discs.

It can be either, because they don't manufacture these things in a laboratory. Dust and prints can make a disc not play without cleaning, a fine scratch can make it unplayable even after cleaning.

Then some discs don't play regardless. For my time and money, it just seems easier to test such discs in another player.

If it's a disc issue as you say, it should do the same thing in the other player.

Same here. I bought S1-S7 on Blu-ray as they came out and procrastinated on S8 when S1-4K was announced. Don't really want to blow a ton of money on rebuying them all over again, although I'm sure I'll eBay the Blu-rays later to off-set the cost even more.

Yes, definitely. I've only had problems with a couple of discs in my collection as far as I recall. And in both instances they refused to play on both my players. Replacement discs worked fine.

Anyways, l ordered my set on Prime Day, hopefully there won't be any issue the set.

Just received mine after biting on that Amazon discount. Whoa! Besides the flimsy slip, this is a beautiful, badass and compact little set. I don't feel quite as bad about no bluray's being included since I own seasons 1-6 on bluray already, but that does still suck.

I love the gold and black colors, reminds me of the LotR bluray set. The awesome textured dragon artwork and solid elite cases with excellent artwork just really impresses. So glad I got this for $143 with tax, totally worth it. That's less then $18 per season, ya can't get better than that.

Finally picked this up...

* Wanted to report, I had some issues playing discs in my XBOX Series X...this is what finally got me to ditch the Series X and pick-up a stand-alone player. All discs seem to work fine in that, so far. Going to test them out this weekend. Series X wouldn't even recognize the first disc of Season 1 (though others I have randomly tried work, that disc just refuses).

* Does anyone have any recommendations (or do they even make?) 4K UHD 4-disc cases (with the flipper in the middle)? The only annoyance I have with this set is the stacked discs...I would totally invest in replacement cases for this.
