Default What ever happened to these titles??

Over two years ago, Sony/Columbia said they were releasing the Matthew Broderick GODZILLA - what happened to it??
Warners released EXCALIBUR on HD - where is the Blu version?
Towards the end of the format war, Universal said they were working on STREETS OF FIRE for release on HD - no word on Blu.
Lastly, months ago I read that some studio would be releasing BOYS FROM BRAZIL on Blu - when?

Sony did us a favor. That film (Godzilla) was the biggest disappointment of that summer and on the map for worst of all time, setting a new low even for Roland Emmerich (which is hard for him to do being that Emmerich is the Uwe Boll of blockbusters.)

The other two, though I am eagerly awaiting if they ever do come out. I remember those same announcements and am curious as to what happened.

Dont be a hater

sure the ending was bad, and brodericks character was beyond dorky

but it was a decent summer popcorn movie

at the time i remember the effects being really cool, and godzilla looked WAY more awesome than the old (and just as corny might i add) movies

I agree. Anyone expecting more than a movie about a giant lizard tearing apart a city was fooling themselves.

I clearly remember reading a press release that stated that Warner will release all the HD-DVDs that were never on Blu-ray by 2009. I cannot recall where (I am sure others will). This not only included Excalibur, which I really, really want, but also Forbidden Planet, the Marlon Brando Mutiny on the Bounty, and others. Mutiny on the Bounty would look amazing in HD. I do want lossless soundtracks on these things, and maybe that is holding it up.

It is not my intent to divert away from the subject of this thread, but Godzilla's uselessness in the annals of American Cinema is cemented by two things and must be addressed (though these opinions are admittedly mine and I wouldn't actively protest the release of Godzilla, in the way that the anti-smoking freaks try to take away a restaurant owners right to say what goes on in their building

1. No one got stepped on. Inexcusable. What's the point and where is the terror of a 20 story tall monster who doesn't step on anyone?

2. Very old man outruns Godzilla's arrival on the docks. For an 80 year old man, he ran like Ben Johnson on steroids in the 88 Olympics. I almost got tossed out of the theater for laughing so loudly at that scene. (This was Emmerich's crowning achievement of cinematic lows at the time. He undid his previous record of the part in Independence Day when, after the aliens launch their synchronized strike on Earth's major capital cities, Will Smith's family dog escapes certain death by jumping out of the way of the alien blast into the waiting arms of mom and son. JUST IN TIME. That could have been a classic campy scene, but it was portrayed in the with such seriousness that any viewer could tell that being deliberately cheesy was not the intent.)

Sure it had good special effects, but with a budget of $130M it better. This was a movie lampooned in Taco Bell commercials at the time too where the fake movie studio has all the merchandising deals for a fictitious movies for "The Slug" but no script before going into production and principal photography. When Taco Bell ridicules you, it's bad.

Where's Lionsgate's Frank Herbert's Dune, which was trailered three years ago during the intial BD rollout?

Also, where's Paramount's Lemony Snicket and Team America, similarly trailered three years ago?

I am still wafting for Van Helsing and Mystery Men both were on HD-DVD and only Van Helsing has had any whispers of a BD and that is without a release date.

I am a little surprised that both Warner & Universal still have many HD DVD titles to issue on Blu. Universal has gotten better lately with many catalogue releases put on blu at least.

Forbidden Planet I have on HD DVD (the tin gift set), & got around to watching it last week. The PQ was pretty good, but there is room for improvement for sure... Plus that 30GB disc was loaded with other stuff (4-5 hours of other video extras).

Boys From Brazil was definately worth importing from the UK, you can usually get it for $25US or less I think.

Whatever happened to the HD-DVD to Blu-Ray transfer of Universal's SPARTACUS....? It never followed through either.

Sigh, I miss the Simon Pegg films. He's just plain genius when it comes to making films like Hot Fuzz and Shaun Of The Dead. It's just not a worthy Blu-ray collection without him.

Perhaps after he's finished with "The World's End", maybe then we'll see the light of day with the Blu-ray releases.
