I have a Sony vega crt ( big a** goliath) 480i/480p/1080i with the best connection being component. I'm using it as a secondary tv in a rather small room and will mainly be using a PS3 on it for gaming and some BD movies. I was wondering how to get the full use of it when playing a 1080p BD or 720p game?
Is it worth buying a BD player that can upconvert to 1080i using component, if they make one? Or is there a reasonable priced av receiver that upconverts to 1080i through component to tv? I was told by the guys in blue there isn't a receiver that will do that. I'm kind of going cheap on this secondary set up and I just need a receiver for it. But if a new av receiver won't really help in pq, I was thinking of just using my old Yamaha HTR-5640 and buying a stand alone Blu player with the single speaker input jacks so I can get the LPCM 5.1 that I was reading on another post. I know it's a lot of questions I tossed out, but any help would be greatly appreciated. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=93643 As for getting HD audio you have a couple options. A new reciever that can accept HDMI from the PS3 or get a standalone like you mentioned with multi-channel analog outputs (assuming your current reciever has the multi-channel analog inputs). For a receiver to just take HDMI from the PS3 you have a few "cheap" options out there. As for handling upconversion of the component signal as well, you will get into some more expensive prices. I guess the best thing to do is see what you want to spend and make the decision from there. I personally would think you would get the best benefit from upgrading the receiver rather than the blu-ray player. It may cost more now but I feel you would get the most benefit from it in the long run. If anything I said is incorrect please feel free to correct me. Let me know if you have any more questions. Hope this helps some. |

No you got it all correct.
I guess what i'm shooting for is trying to get the best out of the tv when paired with the PS3. So picture quality was the first idea, but if i'm basically going to get the maximum pq just out of the PS3 I'll look into a receiver like you said. I already have a full 6.1 speaker system just no receiver. This is from my older setup from about 6 years ago, i've since upgraded my sytem but still have several components from the old system. I've got about $300-$400 to throw into it. I should also add the room the system is in is relatively small, so i'm thinking 5.1 would be the best option. My old Yamaha has all the individual analog inputs, but I fall into the PS3 not having them. Any ideas on a decent receiver at this price range? Also Thank you for the reply this is a big help. Unfortunately when I went over to Best Buy the guys didn't help much at all. They didn't even know there's receivers on the market that can upscale to 1080i. They thought I was making it up. When I asked if I could go hdmi from PS3 to a av receiver with upsacle and then connect the receiver to tv by way of component if that would work. Again I told them I just want to upscale to 1080i and not 1080p because the tv isn't capable of it. They said no. I asked them why is that since I can get 1080i over component cables from my PS3, and the reply I got was no it can't, it must be done by hdmi. So they confused me and now I feel like a noob with all this. I won't be watching to many dvd's, if any on the tv. Mainly just BD's and games on the PS3. Thanks again for all your help Last edited by 1blufan; 05-22-2009 at 06:58 PM. |

Glad I could help. As for a new receiver I'm not too sure of what each one can do at each price range. There are a ton of options and since you know your main need from one, I would suggest going to this area of the forum and posting a thread and see what others have to say.
https://forum.blu-ray.com/forumdisplay.php?f=60 From what I know, The Sony STR-DG920 can do what you need it too. It's around $400 but it's last years model so you may be able to find some deals. Other reciever brands would be Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer etc. Like I said, ask in the reciever thread and I'm sure you'll get some great help over there. Good Luck ![]() |
