Hey,
I just have a few questions on some Blu-ray titles, which will help me decide if I want to buy them or not. American Psycho - I have the "Killer Cut" on DVD, but I'm thinking of upgrading. I hear the picture quality is not great, but I really like this movie and was wondering if it's as bad as everyone says it is. Twister - How is this as a title in terms of PQ and AQ? I hear mixed reviews from many people. The Descent - I don't know technical specs of Blus, but are there two types of "The Descent?" (like by bit rate or anything) Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining - How are these Kubrick blus in terms of PQ and AQ? Terminator - Good PQ/AQ? Again, I hear mixed things. Terminator 2: Skynet Edition - I hear that I need internet connection for this and I'm not sure I do. Also, it seems people are having problems with it. I have a Panasonic DMB 30, would I have problems? Dark City - worth blind buying? This is long-winded, but I'd appreciate help from anyone. Thank you. |

I have a few of these-- here's my 2 cents!
THE DESCENT-- great PQ quality-- well worth buying-- DARK CITY-- good PQ (this is one where I noticed the DNR that posters are so obsessed about-- it's very clean PQ but soft in spots) TWISTER-- better than the dvd's (which were compression nightmares) but still not great PQ-- light reccomendation THE SHINING-- fantastic quality-- best it's ever looked and can't imagine it getting any better-- I just got EYES WIDE SHUT but haven't watched it yet! |

I just popped in the Skynet edition into my fathers S350 and it was saying to connect to the internet, which is easy as heck seeing as how the cable box is right next to it but I didn't feel like messing with any Cat-6 so I put it in my PS3 and started right up. IMO, the video was more of an upgrade than the audio which has always been top notch, even as a plain old DTS track. And since it is only $20 until tomorrow at BB, I'd get that mother. Well, I did, but I meant if I were you.

If you're a big fan of American Psycho, I'd recommend importing the Australian release (it's region free), I hear the PQ is far superior, and slightly better AQ.
I also highly recommend Dark City, I've heard it described as a "thinking man's Matrix." It's well worth the $12.99 @ amazon. |

My friend has the AUS release of American Psycho, and it was fantastic, especially the audio. I heard things, including subtle music, that I hadn't heard before.
There are two versions of The Descent, both AVC and MPEG2. You'll probably only find the MPEG2 version in the US. I actually like the MPEG2 version myself. The Terminator was good considering the source material, not extremely sharp, some decent amount of film grain, more overall clarity in the whole picture. The new release of the The Terminator is the same as the first as far as I know, just a new cover. I have yet to see the Skynet Edition of part 2. Dark City is probably worth the blind buy, and you can find it at $20 or less. Now if it was pushing $30, that would be another story. But it's very atmospheric, gothic and brooding... cool story, too. Oh, and the PQ/AQ in it is excellent! |

With the re-release of Terminator all you get is the new slipcover all the spec from the previous release are the same.

[Show spoiler] . Good action sequences? Yes. Great visuals sequences? Yes. Thought provoking? No. I thought that the Matrix was better, but don't get me wrong, Dark City is still good.

PQ is a bit grainy and soft. It's still a big difference from the dvd version. It's also presented in widescreen which it wasn't before)same with FMJ and The Shining. They cropped it but you know how it goes...

I found Eyes Wide Shut to be an incredible transfer and much better then the DVD although not perfect. The Blu-ray also features the uncut version which gives the full effect of the masked orgy. Definitely worth picking up if your a fan of the movie.
The Shinning also looks better then ever and probably as good as it will ever get until a higher definition format comes along. |
