There was some kind of open discussion where people asked a fox rep various questions regarding blu-ray releases and it was asked about the earlier seasons of Smallville and like u_nick mentioned the WB rep replied that they are in the works and Season 1 was holding them up due to technical issues. At this point my guess would be that these will come out next August/September and all seasons of Smallville would then be available (finally!). And this is why I haven't purchased Season 9 yet. I just hope we aren't forced to buy all 10 seasons at once. That would be one expensive set!
I'm really looking forward to these coming out as I much prefer seasons 1-5 of Smallville over 6-10 as IMO the show has went downhill somewhat since. It's hard to believe there's only 19 more episodes of the show and then it will be complete. |

I really hope they release them individually because I already have seasons 7, 8, and 9 on Blu-Ray. I really don't want to have to rebuy everything. Plus they often put the complete series sets in gimicky packaging that I don't care for.

I certainly cant afford all seasons. They would have to make the full set pretty cheap otherwise no one will buy. I just want 1 & 2 for now bad.

Anyone hear anything new on this?
HDNet just started showing season one this week. But I'm hoping to get them on blu-ray. |

I have seen no such word.
The last word is that they have been looking at it, but ran into some troubles. But there has not been a definitive word on releases (or not) for 1-5. Worst case... they released season 5 already on HD-DVD, so those absolutely can and should be released on Blu-ray because the work is already done! The hold-up are for seasons 1-4. The weird thing, though... is while they say they have had technical issues... they somehow provided HD transfers for syndication to HDNet... which seems confusing. |

It does seem like a poor marketing move to have not thrown out a Blu-Ray version of the complete series set. They could've thrown in the first five seasons exclusive to that set and got a bunch of suckers (I would've been one of them) to double dip on season 6-9 to get the rest of the series on Blu-Ray. Then go back and release the individual seasons later. |

There was a long interview with the producers at:
http://supermanhomepage.com/news.php some months back saying the total series would be in DVD only. Seemed odd considering they had released the recent seasons on BR. |

I haven't bought ANY seasons of Smallville yet on blu-ray. I only buy shows on blu-ray when they start with Season 1. If they released the 1-5 on blu-ray, I would buy ALL seasons immediately.

Just because a show is on the telly in HD doesn't mean they can slap it on a Blu-ray and ship it out. The bit rate of video on Blu-ray discs is several times higher than that of HDTV and must be encoded seperately. Also, HD-DVDs were usually encoded in 720p or 1080i, one of many reasons they lost the format war, so they can't use that either. Warner Brothers is currently in the process of remastering seasons 1-5 for Blu-ray release. No word has yet been given as to a release date but be patient people. The last son of Krypton's early years WILL be on Blu-ray sooner than you think.

From everything I've heard, WB would have to do a lot of work on the first five seasons from an FX standpoint, similar to how Paramount is working on "Star Trek: TNG". The entire series was shot on film, but the first five years' worth of FX were done in standard-def, so they'd have to be recreated from scratch. The rest of the series' episodes didn't suffer from those setbacks, because techniques had changed by then.
