Default Casino Royale 1st release vs. 2 disc release for sound?

Okay, I own the first release of Casino Royle with the PCM audio. While the newer 2 disc release is on sale I have been contemplating getting that one if the new 24 bit TrueHD track is better than the PCM track. I have read conflicting reviews where one says the PCM track is slightly better and the other said the TrueHD track is slightly better. Anybody compared both?

I recently bought the 2 disc version as it was on sale. The sound is noticably better to my ears, but if sound is the only reason to rebuy this, then I would suggest not. Part of the reason I rebought it was for the new extras. I love to learn about how films are made. Plus, the cover on the 2 disc one is far cooler than the other one IMO.

If I'm not mistaken the TrueHD track is 16 bit, as was the first release's PCM track.

EDIT: Yup, 16 bit with a 448kb/s core. I just verified.

Yeah, I was disappointed that it only had the 448 kbps Dolby instead of the full 640.

I think it's a matter of how the PCM comes through my receiver but I felt like I heard more detail from the TRUEHD track.

I just looked at Highdefdigest's review and they say the TrueHD track is 24 bit while the PCM is 16 bit.

Get the 2 disc, at the very least, the minimum you get is more bonus features and an identical sounding audio track.
At best you get the features plus a track that sounds way better, personally can't wait for the QoS double dip.

If you have the capability to enjoy TrueHD on your A/V receiver than the 448kb/s means absolutely nothing, you are listening to the TrueHD portion of the audio track. However if you are only capable of legacy DD, then yes... it's kinda skimpy on Sony's part.

Seriously, the difference between a 640kb/s track and a 448kb/s track is probably only 200-300mb of data, compared to approx 3GB for the TrueHD track, and 4.5GB for the identical LPCM track.
For whatever reason Sony went with the 448kb/s core instead of the 640kb/s is beyond me.

I can say with 100% cetainty that the Casino Royale CE has a 16 bit TrueHD track, probably identical to the 1st release's PCM track. So, if all you want the CE for is the upgraded audio then do not bother (if you own the 1st release already). If you want the feature then by all means, double dip away.

Here's some evidence to back you up:

http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Details.php?u=945

Whether it's identical to the PCM track, I'm not sure, but the blu-ray.com reviewer seemed convinced there were improvements for the Dolby TrueHD.

Sorry for your luck. If it's any consolation, the 1st release's DD track is 448kb/s as well.

... Another site I do not trust. Like Highdefdigest, they are correct most of the time, however there have been a few occasions where Blu-raystats has given false info as well.

Also, if you have a quality A/V receiver that decodes TrueHD/DTSHD-MA you will most likely hear a difference from a 1st release LPCM title... or if the player itself decodes the HD audio. This could be why the Blu-ray.com reviewer noticed a difference.

Eh, there are trade-off's. I have a PS3. If I had a player with multi-channel analog outs, this wouldn't be an issue. But, and there are a couple big "but's," I love the PS3's ability to handle any disc no matter how screwy the Java programming and I also love the media center aspect of the PS3. I don't even use it for gaming at all, interestingly enough.

Plus I made the mistake of buying a "HDMI" receiver without doing enough research on it beforehand. Turned out it could only accept the video portion of the HDMI, so I was stuck using optical Toslink from my PS3 instead of being able to send PCM over HDMI.

We're in the same boat, I have a PS3 as well, I use it 90% of the time for BDs. However I have a Sony STRDG-820 audio receiver... not as pricey compared to other HD audio receiver but it still rocks!!!

I use my PS3 exactly the same way.

I have a DG720, which must be the receiver below yours

I don't like that it can't upconvert through HDMI (so I still have to use component/composite for other devices) but it allows for the multichannel PCM through HDMI - a cheaper method of getting to use HD audio. I also can't comment on the difference between the original and CE, but I will say the prices for each made me happy to wait for the CE to come along, since the original release was too damned expensive for what it came with compared to the CE.

I got really lucky when I bought the CE. I went to Best Buy the week that Quantum of Solace came out. The CE was advertised as $20 and QoS was advertised as $25, but for some reason the clerk screwed up and charged me $20 for QoS and $15 for CR. Reminds me of my school days when a teacher would accidentally give you 5 points higher on your test score. Not gonna complain when their mistake helps!

That was a heck of a bargain!

Here, when the CE version came out (and I completely forgot to use the movie cash thing inside for Quantum) it was on sale for $32.99 (Canadian prices...dammit) while the original version was and still is hovering around $36.99 and up.

Of course Blu-ray got the short end of the stick, since the CE version of the DVD that was released the same day came in a very fancy velvet-like package with a great price. Us Blu-ray guys got a velvet-textured paper slipcover and paid more!

Here in Canada it aired on two different HD channels, both cropped the image to 1.78:1
