Japan TRINITY: Souls of Zill O'll (KOEI A-RPG)

Quote:
The latest issue of the weekly Famitsu has confirmed yet another PS3 exclusive RPG. Called Trinity Zill O'll Zero, the game is the latest entry into the franchise produced by Koei. Zill O'll was originally released for the PS1, and later remade for the PS2 and ported to the PSP. The franchise is a darker themed, mature RPG, so those worried about another loli Japanese RPG can breathe easy.

Lets keep em coming

Looks better than KOEI's other efforts in the photos but I'll wait for the direct-feed to be sure.

From those images it looks like Turn Based:/

Yeah, but I mean, I don't think I've liked any KOEI game thus far. I hope this one is at least different, if not better, than their past efforts.

Action-Turn Based? It's an A-RPG.

Quote:
US, May 27, 2009 - Koei's new PS3 project shows off the two sides of the Japanese gaming giant. Titled Trinity: Zill O'll Zero, the game combines elements from the Zill O'll series of RPGs, which are hardly known outside of Japan, with the company's star dev studio, Omega Force of Dynasty Warriors fame.

Trinity is an action RPG set in the world of Zill O'll. You lead three characters of different types, Aleus, Daguza, and Zelena, through a massive story that features plenty of optional sub quests.

The game's combat system is party-based, with all three characters using swords, magic, and other attacks to defeat the sometimes massive enemies. The fields of play themselves contribute to the action, changing as you cast magic and break down columns. As an example, you can freeze a lake to walk over it, or pick up a column that's fallen due to your attacks and use it as a weapon.

Speaking with Famitsu, the magazine that broke word of Trinity in its latest issue, producer Akihiro Suzuki and director Tomohiko Shou, both key members of the Dynasty Warriors development effort, revealed that Trinity's development started with the idea of applying Omega Force's action expertise to the RPG genre. The Zill O'll series was just one candidate as a possible series for the game at the game. Koei went with the series after investigations revealed that players in Japan wanted a fantasy-style RPG.

PS3 owners in Japan can look forward to the title this Winter.

A-RPG!??
That doesn't make sense or I've never played one like that before.

Noooo...I'm talking about the combat.
Is it turn based? like you take turns during battle, you pick your attack then your enemy picks his/her and you pick your attack etc.

Or is it Real Time? meaning both of you can attack at once, you can run around the battlefield???

thanks

Really feeling the art direction. Now it's just a question of how they'll mix RPG elements with what they're really good at, the combat system.

Screenshots on IGN.

Looks like KOEI's applying an arty realtime filter, results ranging from interesting to awful.

Recentish Famitsu screens (there's even more recent scans):

These are from last September:

I'm not feeling that artistic post-process filter at all. It makes the visuals look incredibly grainy and it causes horrible artifacting all over every frame.

P.S. Anyone else think that big barbarian looks a little too much like Meng Huo from their other franchise (Dynasty Warriors)?

That post processing really makes the images look a little off. It's almost like they are trying to copy Valkyria Chronicles art style and make it look like a moving painting. However they are really not pulling it off.

Should be interesting to see if the game play actually makes this game worth a look

The filter's not nearly as bad as it was.

Whoah, I'd call this thread necromancy of the first order, except that Trinity: Souls of Zill'Oll actually came out in North America five days ago.

I've been playing the game for most of that time, and it's "OK".

Think Dynasty Warriors crossed with your typical JRPG save-the-world scenario, and some mildly interesting 3-character real-time combat.

If anyone is interested, I'll post an extended review, as I just finished the game earlier this evening.

been interested in this game for a long time
reviewers say that there's lots of camera problems, but users say that you press R3 and the camera resets
reviewers say combat is very repetitive but all FPS have ultra repetitive combat and get great scores
reviewers say controls can be imprecise but no user says that ...
