Default Yamaha NS-SP1800BL worth it?

I'm on a budget looking for a 5.1 sound system.

So far this....
http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-NS-SP18...pr_product_top

Here's a few things...

- I plan to use it with my PS3
- I don't have a receiver, so I connect the speakers direct via optical(Possible?)
- It will be used in a small bed room

What do you guys think?? In terms of quality/price.

I'm willing to spend a little more, but so far I only heard that with this price it's hard to hard to beat.

probably overkill if you ask me. the 1800 is a superb receiver with more power than you will ever use in a bedroom. and without clicking on the link I think it is around $850 shipped which is a steal.

i dont understand you second question. plug in your ps3 via HDMI and it will send both audio and video.

Not sure where you're looking CosmoKid, but the OP is not looking at an 1800 receiver. Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker Package is what comes up from the link he posted anyways.

thepodest - if you're looking for a small satallite speaker setup (and not a receiver as cosmo believes), then this one certainly fits the bill on the "inexpensive" lineup. Other sat setups to look at are:

http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Cha...3536830&sr=1-1

http://www.amazon.com/Energy-Classic...3536864&sr=1-1

Both come highly recomended.

The problem with your thought process however is... You cannot plug speakers into the PS3 without a receiver. You will need to find a receiver that fits your needs as well. Without getting into too much detail (gobs of it can be found in the 'receiver' forum), onkyo 665, yamaha 663, and denon are coming out as very highly recomended entry level receivers.

I looked at these again, and I have to say.... i wouldn't buy them myself.

# 1 reason? Paper Cones. These speakers will always have poor sound quality imho (having said that... I have not listened to them). I'd look into the polk RMs. How much more would you be willing to spend?

HAHA. I was moving so quickly through the forums yesterday (and today), all I saw was "1800" and assumed he was talking about the receiver.
