Default Hey richteer, you owe me at least a grand!

Thanks to this suggestion by you...

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...23&postcount=9

Look what I ended up doing? $50 a piece man!

However, when I played the Sonny Rollins 45, my face was like ---->

Thanks to you, I got about 15 more in the mail. There goes my vacation to London. Thanks, thanks a lot. Now I will be forced to listen to these marvelous 45s and drown my tears in the sweet sounds of hard bop.

Congrats on the purchase, but just be happy they weren't Better Records Hot Stampers or you would have been in the poor house.

Well, these are all albums I love and have on CD. They are ripped to FLAC or ALAC, but these versions literally make the CD/lossless versions sound like junk. I had spare funds laying around, and it might seem like a large expense (it was) but buying in bulk saved me money.

I know what you mean about bulk buying...I work at Costco! Very nice choices indeed and I guess you'll be busy for the next while! LOL

Hot stampers are something coined and found by Tom Port of Better Records and they are only sold by Better Records. They are unusually well "stamped" copies of vinyl that sound much superior to the average pressing and they can be quite expensive. The sound on them can frequently be

Rich,

I just saw a HOT STAMPER of George Benson's Breezin' (one of my all-time fave albums) for $74.99.......I might just have to take the plunge on that one. Food or vinyl?

As I said, they would have put you in the poor house. I have purchased quite a few, many of which were expensive, but the audio performance on some of them is extraordinary. It may be worth it to you to try one of the less expensive copies (in the $50 to $75 range) in the future which has 1 particularly good side to just get an idea as to what they are and a taste for what is possible. These pressings will generally blow away a new heavy vinyl pressing, but they will not be as quiet.

John,

Based on my experience with Tom's Hot Stampers, I would say go for it if you think that you can afford it. I have purchased some of the $50 to $100 copies and they generally have at least 1 outstanding side (sometimes 2). But, again, don't forget that some of the ratings are based on what is possible with a vinyl pressing and the performance can vary from artist to artist because of the way the recordings have been done. What I am saying is some can really be remarkable while others will just be really good for the same cost and the same rating.

I just checked that copy and saw that it is a Mobile Fidelity pressing. Tom is generally not a big fan of Mobile Fidelity vinyl pressings. But, if he rates it as an A-A+ on side 1 and an A+ on side 2 he must think that is a really well done vinyl pressing.

Rich

Rich,

They rated it pretty good A / A+, so I suppose that's a good sign. What would you say is the most outstanding feature of a HOT STAMPER, and I understand that varies from LP to LP.

Rich,

Just noted your edit (^^^) and I'm going to order it. It's not a huge amount of money and I'll be able to make a good comparison as my orginal copy is still in very, very good condition. If it is as good as he claims I might have to fork out the money for that Supertramp "Crisis! What Crisis?" HOT STAMPER that is planned the last time I looked.

Hi John,

Tom looks for the proper tonality from top to bottom (what he calls tubey magic) along with the top and bottom extension and how true to "life" the pressing sounds. He also looks for the imaging, soundstage, air, depth, separation of instruments and voices, clarity, etc. Basically Tom is looking for what we all tend to strive for in all of our audio. Be aware, that the A-A+ and the A+ are the lowest ratings normally for the Hot Stampers. They are normally rated up to as high as an A+++, but on occassion, there may be a fluke pressing with an A++++ rating as:

http://www.dccblowout.com/product.as...stevetease_jsr

which to say the least was expensive and about 2x the cost of my copy.

It took quite a while, but here is the Better Records Grading System (I couldn't find it on the website )

You're very welcome. The cheque's in the mail... :-)

In the post you referred to, I mentioned the four single-sided 45-RPM disc version of Lt Kije. I have it now; the dynamics and imaging are amazing!

I really can't get enough of these 45 RPM reissues. Dead silent, black background. It's incredible. I had a friend over, and he was with his daughter. She knows nothing about vinyl, she's only 4. She said "Daddy his radio that plays the black plates sound better than your radio." lol - She was really fascinated with records, she didn't understand why they were so big, but she liked it and the gatefolds, artwork etc. Which just shows that listening to records just goes beyond the music, it's a wonderful tactile experience. The great artwork, liner notes, and in some case gatefold covers. All that is lost to the modern generation.

Latest 45 rpm haul.
