Question no subwoofer and "large" speakers...HELP

hey guys, i currently have a 5.0 polk audio setup (rtia7 fronts, csia6 center and fxia4 surrounds) paired with a pioneer 1018 receiver.

i dont have a subwoofer at the moment so im relying on my fronts to handle the bass.

after running the speaker setup with my receiver, it suggested i set all my speakers as "large"

is it just doing this because i dont have a sub? and should i switch them to small now or wait until i have a sub to handle the LFE/bass and then switch?

any help is appreciated, thanks

If you set all your speakers to small, you will lose all the LFE bass and the bass directed to each channel. Turn your front speakers to large and set the surround and center speakes to small. This way, all the bass will be redirected to your front speakers. In the future, consider adding a subwoofer to your setup.

thanks for the quick reply...so should i run the speaker setup again and set them to small or just manually set them to small now?

also, i notice during movies whenever a heavy bass sequence occurs a little LFE sign on my receiver lights up...is this because i dont have a sub? or would it do this when i have one as well?

manually set the speakers via speaker setup to adjust your center, surrounds to small, and fronts to large.

  • Manually, set the front speakers to LARGE.
  • Manually, set the center and surround speakers to SMALL.
  • In the receiver's menu, turn the subwoofer to OFF.
  • In the receiver's menu, set the high pass filter of the center and surround speakers about 10Hz to 15Hz points above their minimum low frequency extensions as published in their manual or the manufacturer's web site.
  • Since you have set the front speakers to LARGE, they will run full range. You don't need to set their high pass filter.
  • Run the calibration program again or adjust speaker levels with an SPL meter.
  • Double check the results and make sure Audyssey hasn't done something crazy.
  • Save some money and buy a subwoofer.

Set the PS3 to output audio in LPCM. PS3 cannot output HD audio in bitstream. If you set it to output in bitstream, you will get the lossy Dolby Digital and DTS Digital formats. Also turn the DRC to off. Normally, it is set to Auto at factory.

If anything else comes to mind, I will let you know.

Once you buy a sub, you can set your front speakers to small with a high pass filter of 40Hz or 60Hz. You can try both and pick the one that sounds better to you.

That is very unusual for Polk Audio. They usually publish all the numbers.

Set the high pass filters in the menu to 80Hz. That number works for the vast majority of small speakers.

If they are set to SMALL then it should have them set to some crossover (I'm assuming high pass filter = crossover in this conversation). You want to set them to something so that in your subless configuration the low end information will go to the mains (or sub once you get one). I would just set them to 80 Hz for now.

If it lets you set them to SMALL with no crossover then it won't damage your speakers. You will just lose the sound going to those that is lower than the low end of the speakers frequency range (FR).
