Default WTF - Pan's Labyrinth.

I just ordered Pan's Labyrinth and it's not in english.

You think it would give you a warning or something?

Time to try to return it.

Sometimes things like that can slip through the cracks, sorry bud.

It's a great movie if you make it through.

You're right. When they advertised for it, they coyly left out that it was a foreign film. I remember being stunned as well.

But you should check it out. It's a quality flick nonetheless. I mean reading subtitles, you never get the full appreciation of what is being said... still it's good.

No dubbing!! No other way to go. Watch it with the sub-title, it's much better that way then listening to some annoying weird none matching voices.

That's true, it doesn't really say anything about it being a foreign film, so sorry you got surprised like that. Give it a watch though.

I think dubbing is so hard to make sound geniune since you aren't portraying a character to match your voice, like in animation, but the exact opposite, which has got to be near impossible.

EDIT: Let me try to clear that up a bit. In animation, they create the character around your vocal patterns and movements in the studio when you do the voice over. When you dub, you have to try to figure out what the character in the movie is feeling at that precise moment which has to be so hard because a part in a movie can be played 100 different ways and all be great in their own right.

I just have horrible experiences with dubbing in French. You should see some of the voices they give actors, terrible. I started way back when to go for subtitles and DVD's made that so much easier. I always prefer having the original language with sub-titles.

I do know that people have a hard time with however. Mt friend said he find it too distracting. I guess I just got so use too it by now.

The only thing I ever watch dubbed is anime, because they usually give pretty good dubbing performances (at least with the anime I have seen). I avoid dubbing in live action movies at all cost!! And I know what you mean about French film. I have seen quite a few French films, and those voices are god awful sometimes and are very distracting.

When I see Harrison Ford talking with a south Parisian accent, I just want to nuke something

Anime I usualy watch it in Japanese with the sub-titles, expect maybe the old anime stuff I saw as a kid in French anyway (now use to the French version, did not learn English until mid-highschool) or if it came only with the English track, I got a few like that on DVD.

We should break this off into a thread about preference of either dubbing or subtitles

Rule of thumb to distinguish foreign movies from English speaking ones: When you see a trailer or commercial for a movie and it doesn't have any dialogue and it stars no actors you recognize as English speaking, it's foreign.
