Default Short Circuit...rebooted

I almost cried when I read this. This movie is a shining example of 80s excellence. Is anyone else as upset as I am?

Robot Chicken Writer to Revive 'Short Circuit'

Dimension Films has hired a new writer to plug away at a remake of 1986’s Short Circuit. Stepping up to the screenwriting table is Dan Milano, creator of the show “Greg the Bunny” and a writer for the Emmy Award-winning series “Robot Chicken.”

The original told the story of Johnny Five, a robot built by the military to be a weapon, but it gained a personality after it was struck by lightning. Johnny Five is alive.

When the reboot was announced in April 2008, the original writers, Brent Maddock and S.S. Wilson had been hired to write Johnny Five’s return to the screen. It looks like Bob Weinstein was looking for a different take on the character now. It’s a good replacement with talent, but can it save this idea? According to Variety, Milano will add a “subversive edge” to the movie lacking from previous versions. The plan is to infuse advance in technology into the lovable robot.

Producer David Foster insists Johnny’s signature look will remain true to the original. Last year I remarked “we’ll always have a new robot with a personality, Wall-E.” The similarities are definitely there, but the products couldn’t be more different. Here’s what Foster had to say: “We think of Wall-E as an extended trailer for our film, because it’s the same face.” If only the creativity was the same.

There is absolutely no need for a reboot, this movie is excellent the way it is.

Agreed, Wall-E can already be considered a remake of Short Circuit.

Basically every property that had any success is now potentially a remake idea. Writers are getting lazier and studios are getting more cautious because they are afraid to fail with new ideas.

This is absolutely re-freaking-diculous.

You know, it's not like there's not already a never-ending supply of original material out there to make movies from. They're called BOOKS!! Some of the most successful movies ever made were books first. A few small-time success stories of movies-from-books that come to mind are Harry Potter, LOTR, Jaws, Jurassic Park, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Twilight. Keep bringing good books to the screen, and there will be no more need to re-hash/ruin old material.

I predict this remake to be a waste of film. I enjoyed the original, i really like the Johny 5 character and his creator. A classic in it's own unique way.

Exactly, what's next a remake of My Science Project? Or how bout Real Genius? It's clear that many in Hollywood grew up in the 80's and for them many of these movies are dear but how bout coming up with your own projects and ideas and making new movies instead of copying what was already done.

yeah why do a reboot. do another part of the story, like terminator salvation and star trek. those were sequels, but not really, more like series reboots without ruining the originals. we dont need them ruining 80s classics like karate kid and short circuit
