Default Onkyo 606 and oppo BD question

I just plugged everything and I have 2 questions

1. Shouldn't the Onkyo displays DTS-HD or Dolby Digital HD? Because right now it doesn't!

2. I'm also using a Pioneer regular DVD player for my PAL movies and this one plays the sound only thru the 2 front speakers, nothing from the center channel. And if I try to press the Movie/Game/Music button on the Onkyo it just says Not Available. This player is hooked up via Component to the TV and Coaxial to the Onkyo.

Thanks in advance!

If you want HD audio you need either an hdmi cable from the Oppo to the Onkyo or multichannel analog audio inputs, I would suggest hdmi.

The oppo is connected to the Onkyo with a HDMI cable and when I press the display button on the oppo it says DTS-HD on the screen of the TV but not on the receiver, so that's what's wrong.

1. In the Oppo audio set-up menu(tool icon on the remote), make sure that you are bitstreaming the audio to the onkyo 606, although there shouldn't be a difference in the sound between bitstreaming and lpcm. All this should change is the icon will now appear on your receiver, it is not necessary to enjoy hd audio.

2. Make sure that you are bitstreaming your audio from your dvd player as optical can only handle 2 channels(L and R) of analog audio.

Set your Onkyo to Direct and then make sure your Oppo is set to bitstream via HDMI. Then you will see DTHD or DTS-HD-MA codec light up on the receiver. (there is no such thing as DTS-HD, it's either DTS-HD-HR or DTS-HD-MA (the MA is lossless the HR is not) (DTHD is Dolby True HD) sorry!

True, for 1 but, aries wants to see his receiver light up with the HD codec so he needs to be bitstreaming via HDMI, if he sets it to LPCM then the Oppo will do the decoding and his receiver will only say either direct or multichannel. If he is bitstreaming then he should set the receiver for that input to Direct.

Not true for 2, optical can send out 5.1 in either of the codecs to give DD or DTS, but only the core, you cannot get HD audio via optical or digital coax only HDMI. I suspect that his PAL pioneer player is set internally for 2 channel stereo. he should have it set for 5.1 speakers and optical out bitstreaming and he will get 5.1 in either DD or DTS.

Ok, it's not working. Neither for 1 or 2.
For the oppo I chose bitstream to HDMI but it just says PCM on the Onkyo display but it says DTS-HDMA on the oppo display. Sorry but how do I set the receiver to Direct? I've been looking at the manual but can't find it.

For the DVD player, it is set to 5.1 speakers as this is what I was using before the oppo and I used to have all speakers working properly but now no center... For this one the Onkyo says Direct and as I said earlier I'm not the one who switched it to that as I don't know how
I'm usually not a noob at that but I'm stuck here...

Make sure the Onkyo 606 is not set to output the audio through the HDMI output
