Default Need help with upgrading speakers

Hey guys, I've been looking around these forums a lot and notice that a lot of you are very knowledgeable about home theaters, and home audio in general. Right now I have the Sony DDW-990 HTIB and I'm looking to upgrade everything, starting with the speakers. I've been looking at a couple solutions that are in my price range.

Number 1
Its kind of an HTIB I guess but no included receiver, which is okay because I am planning on picking up a denon one.

http://www.amazon.com/Cerwin-Vega-Cv.../dp/B000JRKLIA

Number 2
Getting JBL Studio Speakers for the Fronts and Center, the Backs would be KLH T 5AW, and for the sub, I'm looking either at JBL PB10, or Mission 700AS(sorry I couldn't find a good product link)

http://www.amazon.com/JBL-S-Center-C.../dp/B00002EQBM
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-S310-Floor...4524210&sr=1-1
http://www.amazon.com/KLH-5AW-200-Wa.../dp/B00006ANX7
http://www.amazon.com/JBL-PB10-150-W.../dp/B000051SEV

Any input is greatly appreciated. As for speaker wire, it will be in wall and I'm thinking 10gauge?

What's your budget? About $1000? More/less? You've got a couple different price ranges there.

Honestly, if your budget is $1000 or more you can do better than any HTiB on the market. I'm not trying to bash HTiB's, but after a certain price point they completely fail to make sense. If it's less than that, I would recommend looking at Onkyo's HTiB offerings as they have some of the best ones currently.

+1 For $1,000 you can get a respectable set-up by purchasing piece by piece

Welcome to the forum

If you do have a $1000 budget then I would suggest that you go with none of what you have listed. There are much better speakers that you can get for the money. If you want a HTiB type setup with smaller bookshelf speakers look at these for Surrounds and Fronts and a Center and you can complete it with a sub and that would be about $960.

Otherwise if you are looking at tower speakers then there are many options that you can go, but JBL and Cerwin Vega would not be near the top of the list IMO. I would suggest perhaps Polk Monitors 60s or TSi 400, with a CS20 center and Monitor 30/ TSi 100 bookshelfs, shop for those on newegg.com or a better system would be Energy C-500s with a C-C100 center and C-100 bookshelfs from audioadvisor.com or build your system over time and not all at once and check into Monitor Audio Bronze BR5 fronts and the BRLCR center(roughly $900-1000, packaged and negotiated) then add a sub and rears later.

Goodluck

Hey sorry guys, $1000 is a little higher than my budget. I can get the Cerwin Vega system for $500, brand new. The other system I'm proposing would be some parts new, some parts used for about $500-600. I've looked at getting other speakers such as polk audio, but they'll be significantly more expensive for me.

No worries- only reason I grabbed that # is because one of the links you gave was for speakers that were $1k.

I would stay away from Cerwin Vega. There's some other threads about them in the speaker area, but the basics are that while they can be really loud, they lack that "quality sound".

I think there are some good Energy bundles that have been recommended in the past for about the price you're looking at. Callas may be able to assist more on that.

Hmmm shame you weren't here yesterday. Amazon had a great deal on Definitive Technologies Mythos line, some upto 66% off! I would recommend buying better quality speakers at a slower speed. Take you $500-600 you have now and invest in a good center channel, or a pair of nice towers for the front left and right. Then, as you budget allows, add piece by piece. Center, front L&R, Rear (or side, depends on 5.1 or 7.1 set-up), (another pair of surrounds if going the 7.1 route), then your sub. The sub is really the icing on the cake. It's not really needed to enjoy surround sound, but once you have on you can't live without one!

Default what I can get for the 1k

Hi guys I'm in the same place! but with me I'm looking for a/v and Speakers too!
I'm not rushing to buy right now but I want to know what I can get for the $$$.

I have:
50" Pioneer HDTV
PS3 for bluray
Popcorn hours A110
Oppo DVD player

what I have right now its good set for the family, the Pioneer TV Speaker not to bad but I don't like all the wires going in the back of the set to the TV. for that I'm looking for A/V has three HDMI in/ One HDMI out.

with the economy going into the toilet I want to wait and see what else we need to deal with.

my budget less then 1K, I know this is not mush to deal with but that what I can to spear!

I'll sell you my Onkyo TX-SR705, when/if the new 707/807 are announced. It clicks when it switches HDMI source material, but Onkyo said it was a known issue and there was nothing they could do for that model.

It's uh... supposed to do that. It's switching the DACS and etc on and off.

King- are you set on wanting it all now, or are you interested in getting a baseline and adding to it as time goes on? Is that budget the end-all-be-all, is what I'm saying?

If you go HERE you can find a very good pricing on some Energy speakers, at the top are 3 that all match each other and you can get them all for about $430, if you want a bigger center channel then try this C-C100 and for bigger surrounds try the C-100s.

For a receiver try getting the Pioneer 1019 and I think you would have a great setup for right around $1k

I agree, there are much better speaker companies out there I would avoid most speakers JBL, Yamaha, Harmon, Sony, Cerwin Vega and DCMs. Loud and boomy, but not quiet quality as you would expect them to be....

InTeRboy, Look at my previous post and there is a link to some Energy speakers that you can get a 5.0 system for $430. much better for music and movies then what you are looking at...... then add a sub for $160 and you would be set...

I noticed that you looked at the Precison Acoustics setup from Best Buy's Canadian website. Are you Canadian? If so, what is your budget in those dollars?

Pricing for A/V equipment in Canada is higher than that in the U.S. and you should keep that in consideration. Also, if you are going to order from outside the country be aware of the exchange rate, shipping charges, customs/duty charges and the fact you will have NO WARRANTY!

If your budget is $500 Canadian then you can surely get some nice floorstanding speakers, but you have to watch the sales. BB and FS are notorious for offering better than 50% off MRSP sales from time to time on speakers especially.

Additionally, the Sony DDW-990 HTIB may not allow you to connect another type of speaker. I did a search on the Sonystyle website and could not come up with that HTiB. Can you provide a link to this model that shows us specs and perhaps a look at the rear of the receiver?

John
