Default If I bought the Sammy BD-P1200 today......

.........would it require a firmware upgrade before the 1200's first use?

If you wish to play either of the POTC movies, it would. Otherwise no.

OK. Though I don't have either "Pirates" BDs at this time, it sounds like I should prepare a firmware upgrade anyway -- just to keep the Sammy up to date should I decide to purchase it.
Sammy's website says I can download their firmware upgrade, burn it onto a CD and load it into the Sammy. I have a Mac with CD burner and DVD burner. Will it work on a Mac?

Yes for those that have a home network with high speed internet then using the Ethernet jack on a BLU-RAY player is the fastest way and best way to get firmware updates.

Yes, it will work fine. After you download the firmware, you simply unzip the file, which is then an ISO file. Then you burn the ISO file to CD. Those steps are platform independent, meaning it will work on Mac, PC, Linux, etc.

When you burn your CD, just be sure to choose the "Burn Image to Disc" option, and NOT simply making a data CD with the ISO file on it.

The firmware update did more than just enable the playing of BD-J's like POTC. One of the other improvements was that you could press the open/close button when the unit was off and the tray would actually open (before the upgrade, the player would tuen on and first try to load a disc - when it didn't find a disc it would display "no disc" and THEN you could press open/close to open the try). Another fix was that it is faster to turn on with the upgrade. There may have been some other tweaks added that I'm unaware of.

At some point, Samsung should be shipping these with the new firware already installed. The firmware update is dated 20070523 (i.e. May 23, 2007) so it is reasonable to expect that units manufactured after that time may already have the updated firmware. But, since the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing at so many CE companies these days, that may be wishful thinking.
