D'oh, I forget their name, I think it's IEEE. They are THE electronics standards commitee who decides what size plugs will be used to what protocol modem manufacturers HAD to produce. That eliminated the x2 vs k-flex war.
Where are these people today? Why haven't they stepped in? Why haven't they told Toshiba and company, "Nice try, but Blu-ray is the standard." Where are they? They should have the final say. They only stepped in when modem manufacturers didn't fix their own mess. The most people lost was full use of a $50 modem. Yet, they let that stuff go to market. These High Definition players are going to cost well over $1000 bucks. They better step in NOW. How many times do I have to say it? Don't piss off the end-user! You guys have to protect the consumer. Otherwise they will play with consumers all the time and change the standard every few years. American history is rich with that kind of kaos. Those who forget history are destined to repeat it. Save us now! Or else we will be doomed to settle for DVD9 and Superbit. |

As an organisation - would you step into this minefield unless you had to? I 'm trying to think of one instance where the IEEE have stepped into the Consumer electronics arena.
If anyone is thinking of the DV camera firewire interface otherwise known as IEEE1394, as far as I know it was already proposed for the computer industry and is in common use in that industry. The consumer market instead of developing their own proprietary standard tried something different for a change and effectively hijacked it, as most people immediately think of DV cameras when they hear firewire. I wish they would do this sort of thing more often. There is one organisation whose responsibility is right in the middle of this... and the winner is HD DVD!!!! It's the DVD forum who should be taken out at dawn and dealt with. However they are like a mini UN (lots of talk but little action and even less power). I'm certain Sony is on the DVD forum and I think all the Consumer electronics industry's usual suspects are as well. Not that I think it would of mattered as it didn't stop blu ray going off on their own thing, and I'm sure if blu ray had won Toshiba and co would have done the same thing and gone off on their own, unfortunately this is an area that can't really be governed by anything except economics or common sense, which is in very short supply as it all got used up on the DVD standard. |

I also wondered why the DVD forum accepted HD DVD...
So many members of the DVD forum are in the BDA, I don't get it :? |
