Default Panasonic TC-P54V10 Plasma

Had a TH-50PX60U, was only 720p. Can't wait to re-watch all my blu-ray in the glory of 1080p with 24p 96h

Will the blu-ray look more grainy on a 1080p vs a 720p ? I tested one of my favorite blu-ray on the 54V10 in the store, Foo Fighters live at Wembley, and i thought the grain was way more apparent than on my current 720p. There is no noise reduction set on on my current 720p, and there wasnt either on the 54V10. I'm not really a grain hater, but i thought the difference was quite noticable for that specific blu-ray on a 1080 vs a 720p. The guy did show us James Bond quantum of solace, and the PQ was perfect though, not too grainy, lots of details.

Anyway, thx for giving your opinions on this !!!

PS: Now with a 54V10, im not gonna leave my father's house for a few more years, lol

You can never make a fair comparison between an in store model and one at your house.

For one, the lighting environment is completely different. Second, the display settings would be different. As im sure the store display has not been calibrated. And possibly your tv at home may not be calibrated either?

Yea thats what i thought, the guy working there couldnt really tell me why when i told him i thought the PQ was more grainy, (he was quite a noob in my opinion, when i told him 96hertz is way better than 48hertz for the 24p mode he said its just a detail, LOL). Anyway, yea maybe some setting were too high in the demo in the store, maybe the sharpness was all the way up or something.

Definitely help your dad calibrate his TV.

Then pop in a top tier PQ movie like Planet Earth or Baraka.

I got a noob question about the 24p mode. I understand its worth to use it when watching movies, so we get 24fps like the movie was made. But what about TV shows like LOST ? How are they filmed ? Must we use the 24p mode when watching LOST ?
thx

What's interesting about your question is that Pioneer said many HD cable programs are filmed in 1080/24p so the feature would be a benefit not only for BD playback but "some" HDTV programs also. I have to say though,,, The HD cable coming to most peoples TV's is 720/60p or 1080/60i. So I don't think that all equal up.

They might be film in 24p like those HBO movie, but when they broadcast in the cable is all 60p not 24p. Only blu-ray so far you can get 24p.

I think the set can detect when it's getting a 24p signal, so if the "Lost" Blu Rays output 24p then you should be able to view them in 24p mode.

LOST is archived in 1080p24.
It is converted and broadcast at 720p60, as is everything ABC broadcasts.

Blu-ray is the only way to watch LOST in 1080p24, showing twice as much resolution as the HD broadcast.

We living in Canada, he paid 3300$CAD for it, which is a rip off considering the US price and the current exchange rate . But thats how it is here

US retail price is 2,600$

that sucks man , yeah everywhere i look the price is $2600,that is the MSRP on panny's website. I am hoping the price drops like it did with the G10 series. Do you think your V10 has a better picture than the G10 series?

Both the G10 and the V10 have the new Neo PDP panel, but i think the V10 have better colors and better blacks. Beside that, and its the most important feature in my opinion, the V10 have a properly working 24p mode @ 96Hz compared with the G10 that also have the 24p mode but only @ 48Hz which is known to make a flickering effect. Also, the V10 looks kinda cool with the ''one sheet of glass'' which is not on the G10 models.

Got it today, its a pure beauty, lol. BD looks fantastic on it.

In order to have the most accurate shadows and blacks, is it better to set the ''black level'' to light or dark in the advanced picture menu ?

Black should be set to "light" I believe. Also the G10 does not have the NEO PDP panel. congrats and enjoy! Let's see some pictures!!!!!!
