Default 'Superman The Movie' on BD, any GOOD?

Superman: The Movie Blu-ray

Superman: The Movie Blu-ray Review

Did the movie undergo a strict process of picture restoration?
What about the picture quality?

And the Donner's Cut of Superman II? The picture quality?

The PQ is good overall, I'm not going to say "for being made in the 80's", it's just good. But of course they only include DD, no lossless.

Superman: The Movie is a definite improvement over the DVD in PQ. However, it's mostly in colours and not clarity. The film itself was filmed with a glow on the image that makes it very soft and 2D.

The Donner Cut of Superman II is pretty much the same deal... except that it is awesome because it is closer to the real version of the film that should have been released in the first place. A lot of people complain about Donner's use of actor test footage. I'm very forgiving though since it was the only way to get his scenes back into it without trying to find impersonators young enough to reshoot the scenes with. Plus, some of Lester's retarded concepts have been completely removed (Celophane 'S' shield/net always comes to mind first).

Personally, I jumped at the chance to have both of these on Blu-ray. Never had a second thought about getting rid of my DVDs.

I rented Superman: Them Movie not to long ago and was suprised at how good it looked. It is deinitely hi-def quality. Anyway, I liked it enough that I recently purchased it on Amazon.

Note though that I'm not upgrading from DVD this is a first buy which makes it an easier choice.

I was very pleasantly surprised at the original SUPERMAN-- it has that
70's soft focus thing happening throughout yet it's very clear and colorful--

Both BDs are definite upgrades to the DVDs, and are recommended to fans of the films.

Hopefully we will see a re-release with a lossless soundtrack.

Quick question -- does the current bluray for SUPERMAN (1978) include the "extra scenes" or is it the original theatrical cut? I prefer the theatrical cut, so I'm curious if they've employed seamless branching a la CLOSE ENCOUNTERS.

The answer is yes. The current Blu-ray of Superman: The Movie does have those extra scenes that were integrated into the film when this was first released on DVD back in 2001.

I'm actually passing on any of the old Superman movies. Wish Bryan Singer had actually done a true reboot and started fresh. Should have called the movie Superman and left out that he had been gone for 5 years. Then the sequal should have been a new villain. Maybe Brainiac or Bizzaro. Enough of Lex Luther already...

I think it's funny that one would be excited about that sort of stupid thing being removed, but the spin the world backwards to reverse the flow of time gets re-used. Yeah, I know that it was originally not supposed to happen in the first one or whatever, but it's even more stupid than the celophane S shield. The magic shield is potentially passable in suspension of disbelief because that could just be a special ability that he has as a Kryptonian. But spinning the world backwards does not make time flow backward. I cannot even begin to understand how they thought that would make a good point in the movie.

As for the topic, yeah the first one looks good. Don't have the second one, and as long as the only version available on the market doesn't give me a choice of seeing the original version, I'm not going to bother with it. It really annoys me when they have the technology to put out multiple versions of a movie on the disc, but not only fail to do that, but fail to make the original version available at all. Like, I'm all for extended edition of Lord of the Rings, but if they put them on BD and the theatrical cuts weren't available as an option, I'd be cheesed off. It's just stupid to not even have the original available when the "director's cut" is so drastically different.

What about DIRT and NICKS on the print? Have those been totally removed from both the movies, 1978 SM and Donner's Cut S2?

I'm glad the PQ is excellent! I'm a big Chris Reeve fan! Is it one of the best BDs out of there in terms of visual quality?

It still makes more sense than the kiss that makes Lois forget everything. Lester's Superman feels more like a comedy, and while some light comedy never hurt the first film, in this case it makes the villains less intimidating. Donner's version of Zod is a lot better than Lester's. The scene where he picks up the machine gun and starts shooting is maybe the best moment for this character and what does Lester add to the franchise? Slapsticky wind effects.
