Default Better than Ikea: The custom Pac-Man coffee table

Better than Ikea: The custom Pac-Man coffee table
14 minutes ago - 10:20 AM on 06.16.2009, Nick Chester 3 comments

Looking for the perfect accent to his game room, Ontario-based game collector Syd Bolton came up with a great idea – hire someone to design a Pac-Man coffee table!

Bolton contacted artist Erin McFadden who transformed a regular old coffee table into a work of art, depicting a classic arcade Pac-Man scene. As awesome as the final piece is, Bolton says his original vision was even more grand.

“At first I wanted a collage of my favorite video games characters,” he writes, “like Link, Mario, Dirk the Daring, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper.”

But the timing for Pac-Man was right, as he’d just added an original Pac-Man arcade cabinet to his already impressive collection. You can check out more information about his full collection at his Web site; Bolton is also the curator for the Personal Computer Museum, which you can read more about online.

Very cool design the guy has a few games in the background too.

I'd have to get a Galaga one if I had a retro table made.

Considering that I see a ton of Xbox games in the backround... the guy probably has a ton of time on his hands waiting for the cardboard coffin to show up, so yeah, why not make a retro table? *LOL*

I need a coffee table for my media room, and have been tossing around design ideas (movie based) and I like the concept.... and the design looks good with the exception of pac-man himself....... looks like it's oddly wrapped, but either way, pretty nice overall.

Spend money on a custom painted coffee table but game on a 27" curved CRT Mitsu set...some people have different priorities I guess...but all those XBOX games (not even 360 games) represents some serious Loonies in their day

I was wondering when someone else would bring that up...although in their defense, that is a nice TV, as far as convex tube sets go.

For a custom table, I personally think the concept is cool. I am not fond of the execution, though. Call me a naysayer if you must. Pac-man is a game that is laid out vertically, not horizontally, so right away I've got issues with the design: the format isn't even right. Then you've got the routed edges, which are great, but not here. The jumbo Pac-man wrap is — shall we say — kind of bizarre and doesn't really fit, literally and figuratively. The artwork itself is passable, so I'll give the props for that. There, I said something positive!

A side-scrolling landscape would have done that table a lot better than Pac-man; e.g. Super Mario Brothers, Metroid, Section-Z...

Normally I'm a lot more receptive and positive to custom designs!

seriously, though I do think that is bigger than a 27", my guess is a 35".

...and all those xbox games, clearly he doesn't discriminate and just buys anything that will load up on his xbox.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the giant Pacman. I think a plain picture or something like familiar Super Mario Bro's level would have been cooler. The original zelda world map (enemies and all) would have been awesome for an area rug

Pretty cool idea. I found this online a while back and had the idea to make 3-4 for my arcade room with a different game on each.

That's pretty slick, Rob71. I'd love to see how those turned out.
