Default HD DVD "preemptive strike" FUD

I have been reading other forums. Yes, I know it's shocking. I read the HD-DVD stuff. Even more shocking. I do have and HD-DVD player too. Anyway. There are a few HD-DVD people who think that Toshiba is going to make some HUGE announcement that will kill Blu-ray and all of these recent anouncements with Blockbuster and Starz/Anchor Bay and the exclusive announcement is just a preemptive strike because Sony knows it coming.... they just don't seem to give up.

I agree - I actually heard there was a 'throat cutting' announcement coming today from the Blu-Ray camp...

actually...HD DVD made the pre-emptive strike with their price cuts and all these deals you are seeing that had a player for 199.99 with a Toshiba HDTV.....or even 99.99 with a Toshiba HDTV...

thanks for the FUD, though...

At this point, even a $99 HD-DVD player would do nothing but scare the masses. They'd be convinced it was going on close-out due to failure of the format.

Who'd you say the next BETA was?

Toshiba simply doesn't have the power to land a deathblow. The blows are landed by the preponderance of 3rd parties hardware, software and content providers who just keep jumping on the blu-ray side. This is a replay of the original PC versus Mac war at a much higher speed, but the difference is that not only do we have the broader support like PC, we also have the better technology (arguably like Mac).

Thanks for the inside info! Good to know we have a mole working for us! Even if it is just fud - it's fun to know what they're gossiping about.

Whatever Toshiba's announcement will be (if any), I find it hard to believe that the Blockbuster announcement was a preemptive strike of some kind! That's not the kind of decision a huge company would be pressured into making quickly just because "Toshiba might make a big announcement soon". (imo)

Wow, I didn't think people would react that way. I wasn't trying to spread FUD. I just wanted people to know what others were saying and wanted to know what you guys thought about it. My point was that the HD-DVD people are deluding themselves that Toshiba is going to announce something big. Sorry if I upset anyone.....

What HUGE announcement could they make?

All Blu-ray studios switching to HD DVD? Players now completely free of charge? Wal*Mart go HD DVD exclusive?

Come on, be honest. There is NOTHING left in Toshiba's arsenal. They gave it a good go and have utterly failed.

1 year to sell 150,000 players (and the fantasy of selling 4 times that amount in the next 6 months). Their only HD DVD exclusive studio failing to get any title to sell more than 30,000 copies (top seller - Serenity, selling approx 26,000 copies since April 18, 2006).

From here on to the end (approx. 6 months from now) all there will be is a steady stream of positive news from the Blu-ray camp.

From the HD DVD side all we will hear are squeals of protest and cries of agony as Blu-ray sales climb to new highs month after month.

Toshiba will be badly damaged. Universal will be embarassed. Microsoft will just shrug their shoulders and pretend that they don't remember what HD DVD was in the first place.

Please post a link to the thread you're talking about. It would be interesting to see what is being said, thanks.

Oh yeah I heard about it as well. The anouncement is that Toshiba is giving away 5 free HD DVD players if you walk in to Best Buy and tell the sales person that you are considering buying a Toshiba HDTV. You don't actually have to buy one though.

I got your point. There does seem to be a lot of people with an itchy "FUD" trigger.

There is nothing Toshiba could do. They only have price to work with, and even if they lowered the price of HD DVD to $99, it couldn't kill Blu-ray outright.

It would end the chance of any other maker ever releasing a player though.

it is FUD, though...he may not be trying to spread it, but he is...even if it is accidental...

the fact is...Toshiba has pulled every cat out of it's bag and dropped their player down to a ridiculous price so early in adoption....plus 5 free movies..

and then the other promotions that we're seeing...

Blockbuster making this recent news on top of some of the other things announced was pretty much these companies coming to a conclusion and realizing where the decision is made....

the customer demand favors Blu-ray, undisputedly...

I think Toshiba has already killed the player industry for HD-DVD. I haven't seen any recent release announcements for new players. Am I correct on this?

I searched and searched, but couldn't find the thread anywhere.... You know how it is when you see something and then when you go back to find it, you can't! But I was just trying to make the point that the HD-DVD supporters are trying to make themselves feel better in light of all the recent Blu-ray announcements and Toshiba and the HD-DVD group has done nothing. I think others may have been right that the preemptive strike came from HD-DVD with Toshiba lowering their price and thowing all kinds of free movies at you. They are the ones who are desperate.

Onkyo reannounced their HD DVD support recently, and a model name. But it is a rebadged XA2. And they took the opportunity to say they were neutral and would look to release a BD player too.
