Default Blockbuster Previously Viewed Blu Crippled?

I took advantage of a Previously Viewed deal at my local Blockbuster to pick up 4 Blus that I was on the fence about. After I was told by the cashier that they go home in the black DVD cases (and I said I didn't want them, and she 'remembered' that she had some Blu cases left over) I popped them in to my PS3 and, to my surprise, the movie started right up. In every case the movies were stripped of their special features, menus, and even the UPCs couldn't be found online when I tried to add them to my collection in DVD Profiler.

What the heck is going on here? I didn't bother returning them but I won't be buying any more PV copies from Blockbuster. Anyone else find this? I don't normally watch the special features right away but on rainy days I like to pull out movies that Blu-ray.com has mentioned good things about the special features and give them a try.

What Movies? Movies from WB start right up. Go to pop up menu to see if there are any special features.

Every Warner Brothers? I'll have to check when I get home. That's so odd. Body of Lies and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang are the first two off the top of my head and they're both WB. Thanks for the heads-up.

The UPC thing threw me. I figured it was special version for rental. Usually when I enter the UPCs they're found. None of the 4 I bought were in the online database.

Yes, every Warner BD starts the movie immediately. You only have a pop-up menu to choose features, scenes, and audio.

Also if you are looking o get the digital copy, you won't get it. I don't want it anyway, but be forewarned. I've bought Wanted, Rambo (2008), and Indy 4 (which came as 2 discs) from Blockbuster. All special features were there.

as far as a Rental version of Taken is concerned it may be because the blu is unrated and Blockbuster is anal about things like that. Rented the new My Bloody Valentine from Netflix, and it did not include the 3D version, just the 2D one.

For more feedback, all my WB titles start right up (New Line too), have to hit pop-up menu for all the features/settings.

I know that at least one studio is considering rental movie only versions to combat losing sales to used copies sold from rental outlets.

Actually, two...

Fox and Disney.

Fox is only doing with DVDs at this time because pressing rental only copies of Blu-ray Discs is cost prohibitive to them.

Disney, however, has found a way to combat the cost issue of pressing rental only copies. Raise the retail prices of titles significantly. Catalogs pricing went up nearly 34% from $29.99 to $39.99 while new to video pricing also saw a similar increase from $34.99/$39.99 to $44.99.

Disney has yet to release these rental only release while Fox has already done so with Slumdog Millionaire and The Wrestler. In fact, there was a major shipping error with Slumdog where retail stores accidentally were sent the rental versions of the DVD. Fox acted quickly to fix that gaffe though and within a week, replacements were available for in-store exchange or by mail direct through Fox.

Which titles were these? Quite a bit of us have purchased these and I don't think I have heard one person bring this up on this thread. (note: Discussion of where we have purchased our blu-ray cases are also discussed on this thread)

I personally haven't had this problem with the ones I bought.

Its gonna become common practice soon that all rental units be like this. SO get used to it when buying PVT's. This is exactly what the studios are trying to do

Anyways every WB movies I have ever watched starts right up with no menu, press the pop up menu and the SF are there

I got the digital copy in a copy of Rise of the Lycans, but not in one of the other movies I purchased.

No rental only copies of Blu-rays have been released yet. So we will not know what they will be like. However, the Fox rental only DVDs were just stripped of the special features.

As for the fear that Blockbuster's PV BDs are stripped of extras, the OP was told that Warner movies don't have main menus just pop-up menus. The OP then confirmed that the some of themovies he had issues with were two Warner movies.

As for the UPC issue, Blockbuster uses special cover art that fits the rental case and these UPCs are unique to Blockbuster's system.

Blockbuster uses their own UPC and NOT the original on their boxes. Usually a sticky, but definitely their own.

http://www.collectorz.com

has a pretty extensive data base as well as IMDB

They use their own UPC's on the labels that are stickied on the fron, but the UPC's on the cover art should be the same as the ones that retail.
