Default Making your own Sticker SteelBook™ cases

Now that Scanavo is making blank SteelBook™ cases for low production items, how do people feel about making your own. For example, if you can buy a small quantity of blank SteelBook™ cases from Scanavo or other distributor, you can easily make that missing Terminator Blu-ray SteelBook™. How will something like this change the collectability of SteelBook™ cases? I can see this bringing in people that are already into making custom covers, but I can also see people leaving SteelBook™ collecting altogether.

I don't think it would be as easy as just purchasing the blank cases, which is the easy part of the equation. The difficult part would come on getting the rights from the studios and/or the trademark and copyright owners for any particular property (if you are selling the final product - even if it's one copy on ebay). In the U.S., the licensing process for this type of project I would assume would not be as easy as it may run counter to existing distribution and/or licensing agreements already in place. These agreements would not have to specifically state "Steelbook" distribution or license to trigger a dispute with existing licensees. You also have to take into account agreements with printers and disc manufacturers which could also come into play due to exclusivity provisions. In any event, whoever ventures into this sort of endeavor (at least in the U.S.) is likely to face an uphill climb in getting a license to move forward with this sort of project (making the economic feasibility of such a project questionable) or be prepared to start receiving cease and desist letters in the mail...before he/she even starts.

the question is if they sold the blank cases how small a quantity would it be?
someone might have to have a group buy just for blank cases. I would like to make a terminator if they dont ever plan to make real one. also who would make the stickers? It would be fun to do but I dont think it will affect steelbook collectability.

My thoughts exactly! Also what kind of paper are we talking here, will they sell it separately, or do we have to use regular paper and tape it on...

Same goes with the spine, is there specific paper to print on or do we just measure it out, print and cut?

They do sell adhesive sheets at most office supply stores and all you would really have to do is create a templete in Word or some graphics program, print it out on a high quality printer and slice it up on a paper cutter.

Voila, your own custom made steelbook

I do not think it will affect collecting at all as there will still be nothing like an embossed, offset lithographed steelbook.

Would be cool to try though......

If Scanavo would be willing to sell blank SteelBooks to the public, then I can see Custom SteelBooks showing up. It will be tricky to do, but I've seen it done with other collectibles, so I know it can be done. I don't know if it would be worth it to buy a handful of the blank ones currently available to do it, unless it was just going to be a one-off for someone's personal collection.

Any quality graphics and sign shop would be able to print up a quality sticker for a SteelBook; they would just need the images to work with. Getting them to do it might be another issue 'cos of copyright laws and other legal issues.

My earlier post was meant to point out potential issues that I saw when looking at the economics of this; as it seems to me like the only way to make something like this economically viable would be to make multiple copies, and then sell the extra copies. If it 's a group project, I can also see copyright issues if any covers are being made by a shop and subsequently sold to anyone, even if it's part of an individual order. If you are printing one copy at home of your favorite movie (s) I would thing that it'd be a pretty expensive enterprise.

...also, one way or another these things always find a way of ending on ebay or some other site for sale (which is what normally starts creating the problems)...

If only for personal use, you don't need to buy blank steelbook from Scavano, just remove the sticker from the "StickerBook" which you don't realy like and replace it with your own printed costom coverart sticker or swap the sticker and the disc with other Blu-ray movies you desire to have a SteelBook treatment.

Good point, I wish they will drop these stickered Steelbook soon.
I'm addicted so I own the 3 stickered release but I'm not a fan.

If the market gets loaded with stickers I'll most likely stop ordering this "kind" of Steels.

Cheers,
Gui.

+1 ...also right now you have the rare combination of decent movies in these stickered steels, but I have to say that I don't see them moving too many 10,000 B.C.s as stickered steels so they shouldn't push their luck on these...

Glud and Marstrand, the IP owners, would never allow this to happen.

No problem at all

What about Final Fantasy VII Hong Kong Version?

I know there are two Chinese versions as well but I doubt very much those would be accessible to us.

Will the completist in you let the above get away? I am have trouble not ordering it.

To sticker or not to sticker, that is the question

+1. Here's to not getting a copy that's printed when the ink cartridge started drying up. Where's all that red in Optimus gone? WHERE?
