Default I need help...calibration for my panasonic blu-ray

Best Buy came over and did calibration settings on my tv - I think it looks too bright and not natural, which I thought was the point of getting calibration done...I need thoughts and opinions to make me feel better...

I have a 42" 1080P Panasonic Plasma tv - model: TH-42PZ80U

Here's the custom settings he put:

Picture +100
Brightness +55
Color +43
Tint 0
Sharpness +60
Color temp. Warm

Any help would be great - I left a post on custom settings section, but I'm in need of help asap - not sure if I need to call back that guy who did the setting or just call the Geek Squad and try to get someone else out here to check it out

Thanks everyone for your help

How did he calibrate it? Without even being familiar with the set, Picture +100, Sharpness at +60 and Color Temp Warm are all a bit disconcerting. Have you tried Googling your model # and "calibration settings"? There are folks that have had ISF calibrations to compare to. Just keep in mind that your viewing environment does play an impact.

That said... if it looks too bright, and sounds too bright... it probably is.

I would request my money back.

Word of advice, the PZ80U does not have any service menu settings worth adjusting. The best he could have done was to do a grayscale calibration. (did he even do that?) Other than that you could have done the same thing he did just by using a calibration disc.

All the service menu offers are controls for adjusting the grayscale...

Panasonic plasmas have no controls in the service menu for adjusting color decoding that I know of. In previous generations you simply used the main Color control for this, but they have apparently re-engineered this control because it now affects the image differently. Lowering the Color control reduces the saturation of RGB, but it does NOT lower the colors' brightness. In fact, it seems to increase it! This is VERY unusual. It's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is peculiar.

The service menu also has no controls that allow adjustment of the color gamut that I know of (It is brand new, so it MIGHT offer something like this and I haven't found it, but I really doubt it. It never has in the past.). However, the main Color control works fairly well in this regard, though it operates on all of the colors, rather than RGB independently, which is what you really need.

well, i do get alot of light in my living room - my living room is small and the front window is close to where my tv is so wouldn't that be the reason that he put the settings up so high?

That could be the reason, but still.... those settings are too high. Get your money back and do it yourself using a calibration disc, such as this one:

I would try this link:
http://www.tweaktv.com/tweak-my-tv/
you can search for your display and if it's there they will have recommendations on how to adjust the settings. just a suggestion. they do have the 42 PZ85U on the site. there is also this thread on you unit at AVS:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1019763. it is a calibration thread for your TV and the 85U. hope that helps.

Default Doing it by eye

Before you do anything get a notebook and pencil. Write the numbers you get etc so you keep track.

Get a color bar (Sony BDs type 7669 when on a menu)

Turn sharpnes to 0 or whatever that's not overenhancing edges.

Look at the color bars and turn Picture (white level) down till the big white square starts to dim. Stop.

Look at the color bars and turn Brightness (black level) up till a very dark gray almost black rectangle (looks like a domino w/o the dots) on the lower right emerges from black. Stop
(or turn Brightness down if it was already too high and you could see it easily)

If you have a blue filter (any deep blue filter that kills (turns black) the yellow, green, red color bars will do) ( If you have a blue filter or plastic gel that is not strong enough, you can use more than one or fold it over itself till it does) turn color up and down till the bars look like this:

If you don't have a blue filter that works, turn color up or down till people look more or less ok (not like cheetos nor like Twilight dudes that are hungry)

Rinse wash repeat.

Meaning some controls might have interacted with others so do a second round.

In this second round if you can turn the lights off and seal the windows and create a man cave, when you adjust the Brightness after you saw the domino emerge, turn it down slowly till the domino (it's artually called a PLUGE) just fades into black for nightime viewing. (Or if you can measure it a 1200:1 ratio from 4% PLUGE to White at gamma 2.2) (Or 2000:1 at gamma 2.35 for nightime viewing)

Now with all that done, go to the monoscope pattern (the resolution pattern) and turn sharpness up slowly from the low setting till you see the fine detail look as sharp as the thick (non-fine detail) but stop before or where you just start seeing lines or edges getting edge enhancement (oversharpening.)

You're done or close to the ballpark.

Default calirbration for my panasonic blu-ray

I wanted to post here cause not alot of people go to the section of custom settings...

I have a Panasonic 42" 1080p Plasma; model: TH-42PZ80U

These are my current calibration settings on HDMI 1:

Picture +60
Brightness +50
Color +46
Tint +4
Sharpness +12
Color temp. Normal
Color management On
XV auto
Video NR off
MPEG NR off
HD size 1

My Panasonic blu ray; model BD-60, is on HDMI 2 - these are the current settings I have on them, post Geek Squad calibration:

Picture +100
Brightness +60
Color +43
Tint 0
Sharpness +60
Color temp. Warm

Are these settings too high for my blu ray? Any suggestions on what I should put them at? Again, I have a Panasonic 42" Plasma,
model TH-42PZ80U

you should look into the DVE HD Basics or Spears & Munsil BD.

doing it yourself is a much better option than asking someone else, as your viewing environment is different/unique than anyone elses.

But as a general rule of thumb, you never want the contrast at max. Usually at or below the 80 mark would be better.

The panasonic pz80/85u settings, i would set to cinema, color warm, and turn off color management. The other settings would need a calibration disc for best results.
