Default Thinking of hitting Cedar Point..anyone been there?

I'm pretty much a roller coaster nut(how I never made it to CP is beyond me). I'm close to Six Flags and Hershey..they get the job done but Kinda Ka which is @ Six Flags is broken down again...it's the best coaster in the area and it seems to be down all the time. I can't imagine how much $ SF loses everyday by having that ride down(they recently filed for bankruptcy). It's their main attraction. Even though it's over in about 53 seconds, I still love it and it's a get rush.

So I was thinking of other possibilities...Cedar Point came to mind. I've heard the rumors that they are the best park out there. Just wanted to get another perspective on it. I think they have something called the dragster which is similar to Kinda Ka. It's a 7 hour drive...just want it to be worth it. Also if anyone can recommend hotels in the area that are reasonably priced, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.. - Mike

I'm a fan of roller coasters too, but, like you, have never been to CP. I remember first hearing about Kingda Ka, and I thought it was going to be the greatest thing ever, so I kept following it's progression as it was being built, since there were at least a couple websites that posted new photos fairly regularly.

Kind of a bummer that it seems to be shut down a lot, because then it seems like a gamble if I actually try going to Six Flags to go on it, only to find out it's not open.

Anyhow, for those who don't know, here's a picture of it (or the most important part of it):

Oh, and sfmarine, you're in NY, right? Have you ever been to Darien Lake?

That's where I first got hooked on roller coasters. As a kid they only had the Predator (the wooden coaster) and Viper (a steel one with loops).

The first time I went to Darien Lake, I was too short to go on either coaster, so I rolled up my socks and put them under my heels in my sneakers, which gave me that extra bit of an inch that I needed to be tall enough. I avoided going on Viper though, because I was afraid of going upside down at the time.

Over the years I think they added 4 more. There was an indoor one in total darkness called the Cyclone; one that goes forward and then backward, called the Boomerang; one of the inverted kind where you are hanging from the track, which I think was called the Mind Eraser, and then a huge one they were building right before they got bought out by Six Flags. One Six Flags took over, they finished up the big one and called it Superman, and I think got rid of the Cyclone to make room for a Batman stunt show in that building.

I haven't been there in at least a few years (probably 6-7 years), but talking about it makes me want to go back.

I'm in Pa near the Scranton area. I'm not too familiar with Darien Lake but I will look into it. I'm close to Dorney Park which really isn't much but I guess it gets the job done. That's hiliarious about the socks.

I'm in the same boat with you about Kinda Ka...it's just an amazing roller coaster. I rode on it only once and that was 2 years ago. It broke down while I was in line...I waited 3 hours and finally I was able to get on. I rode in the front row... well worth the wait. As I got off another coaster it was broken down again. I've heard rumors that they may dismantle it. Not sure what's going on with it. You'd figure they'd make it more reliable.

I was going to go last month and just as I was about to buy the tickets I noticed that it was closed...It's really not worth going out there unless you know you'll be able to get on KK. I heard it was struck by lightening. There's also pictures of the engine completely out and being worked on.

Here I am in the front row...damn branch.

Been to CP quite a few times-and each time has been a lot of fun. Check out their site:http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/par...ters/index.cfm
Hope it helps.
They've added a waterpark too! Never been to it but I'm sure its pretty good. We have stayed onsite at the Lighthouse Point-very nice for a two day stay. I would recommend since you've never been there-to plan on at least 2 days to fully enjoy the park! Lots of great coasters-you have to do The Millennium Force. Probably the BEST rollercoaster I've ever been on. Fast-steel-and SMOOTH!!

Enjoy, bring back pics!

Been to Cedar Point several times... amazing coasters. Two you need to be sure to ride are Top Thrill Dragster and Millenium Force. Top Thrill Dragster isn't a long ride, but it does shoot you out of the gate from 0 to 120 in about 4 or 5 seconds... then you go up a 400+ foot inverting turn, then back down... AMAZING. And Millenium Force... a 300 or so foot first hill, top speed of 92 miles an hour or so... just awesome.
Even the other coasters that aren't necessarily as big are all great... you have The Raptor, where your feet dangle below you, The Mantis, which is a roller coaster where you're standing the whole time... just lots of GREAT variety. Like others have said, go as soon as you get the chance!

I too am / was a coaster nut. Went with ThemeParkReview on their 2007 Midwest trip. We went to Cedar Point and it was fun. Definitely not the greatest park though. Horrible operations involving weather. They would not run Maverick if it was wet and their standard operation was to wait 2 hours after raining to let it dry. Intamin, the designer of the coaster, has mentioned that this is not necessary and that it is just the park following their own operations. With operations like that and inconsistent weather many of their rides go down too often.

I liked the park but I don't need to go back anytime soon.

as stated in previous posts... GO! its definately worth the drive if you spend two days in the park. there are just wayyyy too many coasters and other thrill rides to ride there for only one day. not too mention if you go in the summer, the lines may be an hour or more. its THE park for roller coasters. i have been there 4 times and have ridden every coaster there. i live in MD but go every other year for family reunion which is about 45 min. from CP. my favorite coasters there are millenium force, top thrill dragster, and raptor, and mean streak. they add new rides every year and keep the park in EXCELLENT condition. very clean and employees are friendly. i actually met and keep in touch with a couple employees from there. i cant recommend the park enough. HAVE FUN

I went to Cedar Point in 2001 and agree that it has great coasters. My only issue was every coaster had at least a 1 hour line (and this was a weekday), and the Millennium Force always had at least a 2 hour wait, although I did end up riding it near just before closing with only about a 10 minute wait. Still think it was worth it and had a very good time.

Yeah, the wait times can be a problem. But the park is packed (especially on weekends), so what can you do?

If possible, go on a weekday (Mon-Thurs).

Isnt their a park in Ohio that has that wooden coaster called the Beast? I remember going to that park when i was younger, then seeing it on most of those top ten coaster shows on tv. It was one hell of a ride from what i remember though it has been a good decade and a half since.
