Default Help! Buying Stuff today...Q about resolution

If purchasing a plasma HDTV 50" panasonic or hitachi that does NOT offer 1080 resolution, but 720p, will the blu-ray player bring the quality of the picture up to the 1080 level?
Or must we get a 1080 to begin with?
Our new home theater is for movies only - clear action scenes are super important.
Thanks!

If your TV won't display 1080, then your BD player will not either. The BD player can only display the highest res your TV will support.

I would recommend at least 1080i

Give the model you are considering and we can comment on that particular model and offer alternative TV's in that price scope.

Default NOT Sure - Want something under $3,000 of possible

We don't need a lot of bells and whistles. Just something kickass for watching movies. Our room will be dark and dedicated to the experience.
Thanks,

If i were you i'd get a 1080p tv.. why.. because 720p one are getting phased out as really cheap walmart model, slowly but surely. You can either wait and check the market or do it right now..

If you want blu- go 1080p. Even my wife see's a differnce from HD-DVD vs Blu- (via Fry's setup). PS3 700 - TV - Sony KDS 60' 2300 (circuit city) - you don't get much better than that! - keep it simple use HDMI!

Default 720p w/Blu-ray how MUCH different than...

a 1080 resolution for watching movies.
How much clarity would we really loose by getting a 55" or 58"screen w/slightly less resolution PLUS a blu-ray
versus
a 1080 resolution 50"?
We're thinking Panasonic, Hitchachi or Pioneer.....
We want CLEAR action scenes.
Possilbe to answer in a percentage????

Don't buy stuff "today" or "tomorrow" and still ask people here questions. If you don't do your homework weeks and months before and somebody suggests something and later it doesn't work to your satisfaction, you only get yourself to blame.

As to your question, look for 1080p24 displays to the size that you want. 1080p at 24Hz.

The picture on a 720p will be excellent in Blu-ray....I know, I've tried it on the Vizio 32" LCD I own in the bedroom.

My PS3 however is hooked up to my Sony 34XBR800 which is 1080i.

Having said that however, if you have not yet bought a set, do yourself a favor and buy a 1080p set. This way you will take full advantage of what Blu-ray is capable of.

It's all relative to you're seating distance.. I got a 24 inch DELL PC monitor.. and i'am like 3 feet away from it.. i tested it with DVD and BLURAY from a PS3.. and the difference is very very noticeable... off course if i get away fo 12 feet.. it become less apparent..

In my limited and non-expert experience. I have a sony plasma 720p and only 37". Great picture and from my seating distance big enough for now. That didn't stop me from jumping into blu-ray although I had my reservations. I knew I would not for now, be taking full advantage of my sony blu-ray's capabilites at a true high def resolultion 1080i/p. Somehow I justified the purchase.

What I did expect however was a better DVD experience overall with the SD DVD upscaled and obvioulsy the blu-ray DVDs. So I no longer watch dvd in 480p. I can watch at 720p or even 1080i as my plasma will display both and do its thing to display the picture. I sort of liken it to watching SD cable, then switching to a high-def channel. Although with SD & blu-ray at my resolution/size the difference is not that pronounced.

Now if you are in the market now and talking 50" plasmas and a blu-ray player, you should consider the 1080p, land ook into the refresh rates and a plasmas ability to display 1080p/24. Now that I have jumped in I'm getting the itch to upgrade.

You will see a difference on a 720p display depending on the seating distance and screen size. I have a 720p projector and sit about 15' from a 122" image and the difference between standard definition DVD and Blu-Ray or HD-DVD is huge. If I had a 42" TV and I was sitting 15' away, it probably wouldn't be as great of a difference but if you can't tell the difference between HD and SD on a 42" TV from 15' away it won't be because the TV is not 720p, it will be because your eyes can't resolve that level of detail from that distance.

All that said, if a 1080 display is in your budget, get one, but you don't HAVE to have 1080 display to see the improvements in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

At 15 feet away from a 42" you should not only have no trouble telling the difference between HD and SD, but you should be able to tell the difference between 720P and 1080P. The human eyes are far more capable than most people realize.

I can't disagree with that, just saying that it will vary from person to person and the farther you get from a smaller screen the less differences you'll be able to spot. But yes, HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will look better on any well calibrated quality display in my experience.
