Ive got a customer whos complaining that his new SD direct tv box has no digital output. He uses the SD DTV box to listen to music and wants in digital sound. I found a converter than can convert analog audio to digital for $50. Has anyone tried or heard of this?

Never used one but there's no benefit to converting two channel analog to digital then back to analog. Digital is not better just because it's digital in fact this device will probably make things worse unless that device is upsampling the analog input to preserve the resolution. What model SD DTV receiver is this that doesn't have a digital out? Is the source material surround sound like Dolby 5.1?

Edit: I could only see using one of these in the vent that the consumer's equipment did not have available analog stereo inputs.

Don't bother with that box.

Almost all new DirecTV receivers have some sort of digital output. DirecTV replaces the dish receivers free of charge. It may require a contract. You can probably buy a Direct TV receiver for less than $100. I have seen them at Costco or other electronic stores.

its the typical Direct TV D12 box. This doesnt have digital output just analog audio output. Its funny how 10 years ago all SD boxes have them and now only the HD boxes.

Im telling you. Direct TV does not have Digital output on any SD boxes. I used to work for them for a while and non of them have this output for years.

I can see no way this can help. Anyway, depending on the receiver he is using and what functions is uses, he might be getting that "digital sound" anyway. It is possible the receiver will convert the analog to digital if he is using any kind of DSP functions. But really he is better off to try to leave everything in the analog domain. If we wants to use DD then it would be time to upgrade the box.
