Gangs Of New York Blu-ray Question

Is the current blu-ray version of this movie really so horrible on the picture quality that I have read on here and AVS forums?

I really like most of Scorsese's work and really want to see and own this movie on blu-ray. Also the movie is going for $15.99 right now on amazon.

Is the PQ so bad that I should just wait for a re release of this movie down the road?

I haven't seen it, but it sounds like you'd probably just be better off spending a couple bucks on the DVD for the time being.

The DVD has the same master and sucks big time as well. I made the mistake of buying the Blu before reading reviews on it. It has piss poor PQ in my opinion. Wish I hadn't bought it.

Friend, I was in the same boat as you and decided to take the plunge mostly because my curiosity got the best of me...and I love GONY. I will say that although it is definitely not the best looking title in my HD library, it is HD quality and a worthy upgrade from the dvd. It's also nice to have the whole movie on one disc. I'm happy with my purchase.

So go ahead and place that order.

I was happy with it, maybe it's not perfect but a definate improvement over the original 2-dvd set, now the movie is shown in full, not two halves like the old dvd set did,I have not watched any of the extras yet so i can't comment on those,but it looks like most if not all of the original DVD extras are present! Recommended!

Let me tell you my honest opinion. I just watched the movie on Saturday, and was looking for the "problems". However, I did not find them as they have been posted all over the net. It is not a great transfer, but I liked it fine. I almost did not purchase it due to all the negativity, but I am really glad I did. I am not an "expert" just someone who loves watching movies.

great movie, satisfactory PQ. if you can get it for around $10, it is completely worth it. seriously doubt there will be a rerelease anytime in the next few years.

Don't do it, if we the consumer continue to settle for piss poor quality then that's all we'll recieve.

For those that don't have a problem with the PQ I wonder can you send me some of what you smoked before you watched it?

do people JUST buy movies for the PQ now? sometimes i don't mind shelling out money if i think or know the movie is outstanding. not all of them will be winners

Funny, because this is one of my all time favorite movies. And I still refuse to own the BD because of how shi**y it is. Sold it back immediately after I watched it.

to each his/her own then i guess. i know some people are more picky than others, and that's understandable. i loved the movie though, and i didnt mind spending the money for it. it definitely wasnt as bad as i expected, but i can see how there is room for improvement. if it is rereleased ill sell my current copy and just buy it again

I paid $25 for it the week it came out strictly because I love the movie. But it was a mistake to pay that kind of money for a crappy transfer. I don't buy movies strictly based on PQ, but Gangs of New York taught me not to buy Blu-ray's strictly based on the quality of the film.

i can see how you'd be disappointed after spending that much on it....i got it for $8 shipped off amazon marketplace and i wasn't THAT appalled by the transfer so i wasn't bothered too much

Let me put it this way...I wouldn't pay more than $15, but on my 42" Panasonic I see a great HD picture. Your setup might show different. Like I said, it's not the best picture but it definitely beat the dvd and it is not as horrible as everyone makes it out to be.

Oh you're wrong there, it is as horrible as we all make it out to be. Get your set cal'd and then compare to even the most marginal releases and older catalog titles and you'll see it's a bona fide turd.

I will agree that better care should have been given to a gem like GONY, and maybe my eyes are deceiving me, but the image doesn't really bother me as much as I expected. I actually didn't care for the pq in Underworld: ROTL...way too much grain (omg I said that word...now I'll never hear the end of it. )

i do wonder if there are ever plans to rerelease this though. it definitely was one of the lowest PQ-rated scorsese movies, and he's had some great ones (departed, raging bull, and casino come to mind).
