The Blu-ray box set is definitely not worth it, IMHO. None of the films in the box set are director's cuts. I don't mind the theatrical versions for II to VI, but leaving out Robert Wise's preferred version of The Motion Picture was a travesty. Also, only Star Trek II was re-mastered specifically for the Blu-Ray release. The other versions simply re-used the existing masters from the DVD release. The video quality is decent, but not great. It seems obvious to me that Paramount is angling for yet another double-dipping strategy. They will indubitably, inevitably, make a proper release of these titles in the future. I've already bought and re-bought these same movies so many times already, in VHS & DVD. I decided to just netflix the blu-ray versions for now, until Paramount releases a proper treatment of the series. Last edited by hipster.doofus7; 07-11-2009 at 11:01 PM. |

Paramount has to have the special effects company re-render the new effects for The Motion Picture. Originally, there were rendered for 480p video which is not ideal for Blu-ray Disc.
So as a compromise, they released the original theatrical versions of the films first and will release the Director's Editions later with new special features. |

Unfortunately, the Blu-ray of The Motion Picture is not the director's cut. It is the theatrical version that was rushed to theaters on December 7, 1979 with some uncompleted special effects shots and such. And even though I still haven't bought the 6-film Star Trek collection yet, I, too, am hoping for the Director's Cut edition of The Motion Picture to show up sooner or later on Blu-ray.

I don't care about director's cuts (as a matter of fact I don't like STAR TREK
2's director cut) so I bought the blus. The first film is my least favorite of the series so I don't care if it's the theatrical cut (without the improved effects) Funny thing-- I'm hearing several people whine about not getting the "directors vision" of the film yet there are countless people screaming and yelling about George Lucas (giving HIS preferred version) of the STAR WARS movies and how they won't buy them unless they get the original versions ![]() As far as the PQ quality I've watched 1 through 3 and I peaked at the last title and they all looked excellent to me |

I always get blasted by everyone because I love the Special Editions and I got no problems with Lucas not releasing the original version. Yet in this Star Trek thread they all want the Director's cut. But I already know what they will say, the Star Trek Director's cut are the better version ![]() |

I have the 7-disc set and have only watched IV so far, but I thought it was a B to B+ transfer. People on these forums make SO much of this stuff, if you like the movies you should buy them. If you're always waiting for the "greatest version ever" you'll be waiting forever and miss out on all the movies.
Studios don't care about the 1 percent of people who don't buy because they don't like the transfer. You're not "teaching" them anything. Buy them, enjoy them. |

Yes, like others have said, it is the theatrical cut. They are also not the best Blus out there. ON the other hand they are still much better then the DVD so if you are a real fan, I think they are worth getting, I don't regret my purchase at all. The issue is that DC or new box set or anything else has not even been announced. We all know it is coming, but the question is when and why not have the best version available for now.

All the films are as they appeared in the theatres back in whatever year they first opened. So, for films I, II and VI, it may seem a bit different, like the first time I watched VI, I was surprised at how much stuff was missing. As for I, it is a bit disappointing that the director's edition isn't there, and therefore the late great Robert Wise isn't interviewed and is barely mentioned, which really sucks. And II is missing a key backstory component involving Scotty's story. As for the transfers, they seem fine, unfortunately there is some noticeable DNR involved. Luckily for II, Nick Meyer (the director) supervised the new restore on that film, so there isn't really any problems there.

First, I always am a fan of theatrical versions. That includes TMP. I like having the Director's Cut at home, but have kept my LD (until the BD came out) to have the '79 cut. Perhaps I'm unusual in that way, but at least I'm consistent in wanting the original versiosn of things. The director's cut of TMP (and TOS for that matter) were never intended to "replace" the original and erase any memory of them. There just a different option if you'd like it. Lucas on the other hand has made great effort to ignore any trace of the original Star Wars films. The changes in TMP were made because the film was honestly unfinished. Wise made as much of an attempt as possible to finish the film with as few "modern" effects as possible, going back and editing the film as it would have been edited back then. Yes, Paramount made him agree to put some minimal new CGI in so they had something to advertise, but even those shots were fairly true to what the film looked like in '79. Star Wars was a jarringly different technology crammed in the film. The original discussions of the SE was to just clean up some edges etc to make it look a little cleaner, but instead the film was filled to the brim with CGI as a test run for Phantom Menace. The matching was blatant and strange. In short, the changes to TMP were to correct editing errors as subtly as possible. The changes in SW were to gee whiz over the top change the film. But I still agree with your point in general. |
