Sony has done very well in countering HD-DVDs every move. It first started with the Blu-ray Disc's higher capacity dual-layered 50GB discs. Next Sony acquired MGM Studios and together with Sony pictures made them exclusive on the Blu-ray format. Finally, Sony made Blu-ray disc drives one of the key technologies in the forthcoming Playstation 3. With every major studio having joined the BDA or in Warner Bros. and Universal's case soon to join, the format war will be over before Blu-ray even hits the market. I highly doubt that HD-DVD will even go to market, becuase it's chance of success will be minimal at best. It's just a fact that Sony took the greater risk and spent more money to deliver a superior technology and is inevitably going to reap the benefits. Hollywood and the consumer electronics industry are finally seeing Sony's way to the future and I couln't be happier.

Sony's by far the most innovative electronics company, i remember reading an interview somewhere that by at least the PlayStation 9, Sony wanted to be able to link the machine directly to the brain, whats really cool is that they're serious about innovation adn excited about the future of technology, rather than profits

I think Sony has changed, as a company. They've matured.
In some respects, some parts of the company still cut corners and don't really push the company ethos. But mainly, and especially of late, they have shown a degree of humility that is quite the rarity in such a large company. Their backing down over non-support of mp3 is just one such example. But to look at where they're going and what they've achieve, it really is very impressive. They've pushed hard with some distinct products which other electronics giants would never have had the gaul to go it alone on - such as the Playstation. There is a bright future for Sony I predict, as long as they continue to be prepared to compromise in the interests of the greater good, and they try to push the relevant sections of the company keep up with quality and innovation. Those who continue to knock Sony should take off their blinkers and wake up to a company that is a lot more human than a few others I can think. Sony's products are not perfect, and often far from it, but they seem to actually learn from their mistakes, and that makes them a respectable company in my book. |

Sony's stand on the high quality of bluray has been very endearing to me. I will try to get a Sony player when they become available.

still many people dont buy Sony products because they are more expensive than others, but the Sony stuff definately has a tendency to perform better and lasts longer; while everybody is stocking up on $400 Dell laptops i consider my Sony Vaio well worth the $2000

We all remember the VHS vs Beta battle.
Even though Sony's Beta was a surperior format, VHS won because it was licensed to many electronics manufacturers while Sony tried to hold on to there patented formats. When they figured out that people was just not going the price of a Sony Beta, they released the format to a few manufactures but it was too late. VHS was the prefered format. The Beta was a "scaled down" version of the Sony Umatic 1" studio decks. A bedrock technology used by ALL television studios. SONY has really learned from past mistakes. It does not matter Which is better. What matters is targeting markets, and making the product easily accessable to everyone. This time they started YEARS in advance. The adverage person on the street has never heard of Blue-Ray. But they sure know what a DVD is. ![]() |

I thought one of the huge issues with VHS and Beta was that VHS could hold more video length than Beta. People never hear of new formats at first thats what advertising is for.

The way I see it, Sony is indeed making sure that the Blu-ray format will be come the Optical disc format for the upcoming generation (they along with everyone in BDA as well as other companies giving help/support for the success of Blu-ray).
It will be HD-DVD in nearly everything (at least 90%) and you won't need to be a psychic/fortune teller just to know that. The only thing that worries me though are the ff: -Region coding (this indeed on Bullsh*t feature) -If Blu-ray devices (especially players) would be REQUIRED to be connected to the Internet (again, more BS because it is a hassle & not all areas have broadband internet) -AACS or the anti-piracy measure on Blu-ray will block all players from playing discs that are not within the region (even if those discs are original & legit copies) Aside from that, there are no other problems that I see with the new format. |

I think it was just an error, and he meant to say Blu-ray. I dont see Hd-dvd being in 10 % much less 90%. They dont even have that much support in electronic companies. I doubt Hd-dvd will even make it out. When will Warner officially announce support for Blu-ray?
