Default Is it worth buying the same Blu-ray movie if you already own it on DVD?

I currently have the all of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies on DVD. I've been looking into purchasing the first movie on Blu-Ray, but I was wondering if it would be worth shelling out the extra money for.

What would you suggest?

IMO I would suggest you rent it from blockbuster or online video rental place and test it yourself instead of relying on what others think as most of us will say go with BR

Those Pirates movies ARE WORTH IT, Plus the Trilogy box set on blu-ray can be found at a great price on sale sometimes, much cheaper than buying them individually!

For the Pirates movies I can give a firm answer of yes to that question. The jump in picture and audio quality is quite nice and you will not be disappointed. Rent it first and you will see the difference.

You are seriously coming to a blu-ray forum to ask if we think it's worth it to buy HD copies of your favorite films? Really?

exactly-- what IS the point of blu-ray if it wasn't worth upgrading?????
I don't even need to mention this but after watching a couple of dvd's

i only updated movies that i personally think would benefit from the update......the ones w/some serious ear and eye candy......a lot of the cgi/spec. effects driven movies.

There is no doubt in my mind the members here would be partial to the Blu-Ray version. I was merely inquiring as to the dilemma of spending an extra ~$30 for a movie that I already own. I'm not technologically inept, and I understand that not all Blu-Rays are particularly well transferred. Due to the fact that I don't own the two versions to compare, I was merely asking.

Does it make you feel superior to lash out on someone asking a completely innocent question? Thank you to all those who offered their advice and opinions in a helpful manner.

After upgrading to a 1080p projection on my 100-in screen, I find DVDs totally unacceptable quality wise. If you want to upgrade then do what I did and start selling the DVD collection off. In the last two years, I have sold probably close to 200 titles. Sure you are going to lose some, but are you really going to want to watch SD content on a HD screen. In five years SD media (especially for content that is coming to Blu) will be pratically worthless. We are moving into a HD world.

There is no comparison between the Blus and DVDs of these movies.

I only own the first movie on DVD, but have seen them on blu-ray. Yep, I'll be upgrading it.

I would say yes, specialy if you love a particular movie. Some I don't even asked myself the question, it's a upgrade right away, the PQ is just too incredible when you compare them to DVD. I would say that even the worst PQ wise BD is superior in everyway to a DVD.

You might want to try to sell off some of your old DVD's, that help's replacing them with BD.

If you enjoy a movie enough to watch it over and over, get it on blu even if you currently have it on dvd. The level of detail and lossless sound will make it that much more enjoyable. Most of my blus are movies that I already had on dvd. I don't regret re-buying any of them.

Don't forget that the vast majority of Blus also have lossless audio.

I started moving to Blu before I had my 1080p projector, but I also came from the laserdisc world many years ago. The first title I watched on Blu, PotC:CotBP. The PCM audio floored me. It was what I had been missing the last ten years. LDs had two-channel PCM since the mid eighties. The movement to discrete lossy multi-channel was not necessarily the best trade off.

Thankfully Blu has brought audio quality back to the forefront with the amazing video.

Blu-ray is always better PQ and AQ then DVD.
If you like the movie, it is worth an upgrade.
