Default Studio 40s vs. Studio 20s

I'm looking to upgrade! For better ht experience.... please help me decide if i should get the studio 40s v4 for $975 or studio 20s v4 for $750??

I like the idea of an extra bass driver... but for $225?? I cant audition them since obvisiously the 40s are discontinued. any thoughts?

Good question, particularly given the OP's setup. Monitor 11s are good speakers, but the Studios speak for themselves. I'm not sure what kind of surrounds the JVCs are, but, if those are the speakers to be upgraded, I would probably consider Paradigm's ADP-390s, which I think would also compliment the sub.

I was looking at the same 2 speakers to use as surrounds and ended up getting the 40's. The price for 20's was $675cdn and the 40's $999 with free J-23 stands which cost $420 alone so it was no question to me what was more worth it. It seems to me that your looking to use these as surrounds? If you are I would probably stick to the Monitor series though - maybe Mini Monitors or ADP-390's(for better HT experience like you mentioned) unless you plan to upgrade to Studios all around. If you go with the Studios as surrounds you will most likely want to match everything up once you hear them compared to the Monitor 11's.

sorry for the misunderstanding, no i was thinking to upgrade fronts. i am not pleased by clarity of the monitor line and the studios are what i am looking at.

go with the 40's. they will be very close in price if you buy the stands to go with the 20's.

or you can go with the 20's and move them to rear, then possibly move up to the 60's or 100's later.

either way you win.

No worries man.. I like the Monitor 11's and used to own them but I am very happy with the upgrade to the Studios. I actually wanted 3 Studio 40's up front originally but my dealer could only get the v5's so I maxed out in size for the front 3 and now with the Studio 40 surrounds 5.1 Multi Ch music and movies have never sounded better.
I didn't see a sub in your gallery so maybe the 40's would do better for now(if you don't have one). If you do I think either would be a nice improvement anyway.

Does that receiver have other zones? If so why not use the 40's in another area of the house?

Hey guys, I posted earlier, and did some searching since then.

Paradigm isn't listing the Studio 40s through the homepage (although I was able to find a link them by searching here at http://www.paradigm.com/en/reference...-2-13.paradigm). Now I'm wondering if the model is still available. If they are, I don't see a choice other than them over the 20s (would you want to lose the extra bass driver that comes with them?), especially if you listen to a lot of music. But, if you can't find them anymore, I'd consider the 60s (which I want next).

Anyway, Husker, I'm still wondering about these JVC surrounds. If they compare to your Paradigms, then great. If not, have you considered Paradigm's dipole surrounds?

the Studio 40's are harder to find nowadays since most dealers have been clearing them out to make room for the v5 Studios. The last 3 places I went to this month all had only one pair left and 2 places had brand new ones on clearance for $1000cdn while one was selling their floor models for $1250.

I guess the best place to look if a dealer doesn't have them is probably audiogon or sometimes even on e-bay... from Canada canuckaudiomart has a few for sale right now..

You're right about Audiogon - I've bought a couple of components from there, check the sight regularly. It currently shows two pairs of 40s for sale, but one is listed as sold and the sale for the other one is pending. Still, it may be worth keeping an eye on the sight, especially as it seems that lately there have been a lot of the Studio models for sale.
