If best buy drops hd-dvd, it is 100% dead in the water. It will essentially become a mail order format and thats it for that. After that, a infomercial starring A-Man and B-Man will be on at late nights talking about mandatory ethernet connection the the Look and Sound of Perfect. "Hey amir, tell the guys at home about our special offer! Buy in the next 20 minutes, and we'll send you 10 free HD-DVD movies of your choice! Act now, supplies are limited!" Best buy dropping hd-dvd is MUCH more damning then universal supporting blu-ray.. BY A LONG SHOT.

I wish Best Buy would just drop HD-DVD, they aren't really making any money off of it. There's hardly any margin in the players and the discs aren't exactly flying off of the shelves. BB is the larger retailer of CE in the US so others are correct in saying that if BB drops HD-DVD or even moves it to online only they are done.

You would think that the CE stores and studios want this thing to be over, and they have to know by now that many people are waiting until there is a clear-cut winner in this war. 70% seems to be the number in many places, why not get rid of HD-DVD and increase that to 100%?

Retailers would be very, VERY smart to end the format war before Christmas. I talk to people all the time who want to upgrade to HighDef movies, but simply won't until there's only one format standing. I visited a guy yesterday... spent $3500 on his receiver, and $3500 on his "processor" (not being a big audiophile I don't even know what that is), more than $1000 on each of his speakers and who knows how much on a 70" 1080p Samsung in March, but he said he won't spend $600 on a PS3 to play Blu-ray movies because he doesn't want to get stuck with the losing format. It really didn't make any sense to me at all, but that's how people think. These people are chomping at the bit. There's a ton of money to be made THIS holiday season by retailers if they just have the guts to pull the trigger.

Does this Best Buy rumor have credence or is it just wild speculation and wishful thinking? I agree if BB went BD only HD DVD is dead.

It's just speculation based on Penton-Man's comments, as far as I can tell. Realistically, I'm not expecting Best Buy to say much. Its doubtful they've been having the same ratios as Blockbuster has. Perhaps Penton-Man's clue is in his trivia, i.e. Del(l) as a retailer? If that's not the clue, then I'd sign on with the Target theory. Guess we'll see on Thursday.

Anyway, back to insider questions: Bill Hunt's rumor mill said last week that "The Rock" and "Con Air" might be in line for October, and had previously mentioned "Cars" in September. Any follow-up on these titles?

This was just pure speculation on my part. Sorry to take the thread off topic. Now...back to the Insiders

Okay, it's Thursday afternoon and the information isn't out yet. The suspense is killing me (okay not really, but I would like to know what it is), so are we going to find out about it today as per the "probably Thursday" post?

Yes yes, I know...I'm impatient, but what can you do?

Default Waiting...

Add one more...

BTW, I was in my local Target store this afternoon and noticed the exclusive Blu-ray / Playstation 3 End-cap in electronics on the main isle. About 8 blu-ray titles on display, LCD display set up (but not completely operational yet). No HD-DVD display to be seen, just some titles on the back wall beside the other Blu-ray titles.

Could it be this?

Toshiba HD-DVD Display & Players Pulled Off The Floor At Costco, Van Nuys, California

Sounds like one of the endless "My store in [area] stopped carrying [format]" threads...

Isn't it better to speculate about something that has a chance of happening?

These are (I assume) modded snips from the insider thread. I know at least mine is. I don't know what the purpose of snipping them and placing them in this thread was.

Maybe a little mod clarification would clear things up.
