USA Buy the DVDs or wait for Blu-Ray?

I have been trying to decide weather to buy the most up to date DVD version of a movie or wait and wait for maybe there being a release of the movie. A lot of the movies I want to buy where made in the 90's so I am unsure if they will ever even get a blu-ray release but I also want to help not put me in a situation to where I would have to double dip.

What would you do, buy the movie on DVD if it is not on blu-ray yet or wait and wait for a blu-ray release?

Paul

Stay away from movies on DVD, crappy audio and a lot of horrid non-anamorphic transfers. Not to mention I would imagine most of the good 90s movies will be on blu in the near future, if they're not already.

I would wait for the Blu-ray version. The studios seem to have been releasing a lot more titles from their recent libraries, so if the stuff you're waiting on are halfway popular films, I think there's a fair chance they'll be out soon if you're patient.

Agreed. Just wait with patience and you shall be rewarded once it is released on blu. Plus, this way to save $$ not having to buy it twice.

Ya, I'm a waiter too. After bluray, it's almost rare that I find I want to buy a regular dvd. I think the only DVD's I bought have been Criterion DVD's.

I would wait. Not sure if you are old enough to remember the vhs to dvd conversion, but many of the catalogue movies took quite some time to come out but eventually did. I truly believe this will be true of blu as well, and your patience will pay off with better pq and aq that the blu will provide over the upscaled dvd.

this is how I see it, you are talking about movies that are 10-20 years old. these movies probably made it to DVD a long time ago. Most likely the ones that you liked most you already bought some time ago, if you could wait many years to buy them on DVD then why buy them now? wait a bit and buy them on BD. You can say "but that could be 5 or 10 years", yes, maybe, but you already waited 10+ years, what is 5-10 more (not to mention that you could find out the one you buy today is going to be out on BD in a few months)

I guess it depends on what's being released. For instance, Joe Bonamassa's new live dvd Live From The Royal Albert Hall is only getting a dvd release. There might be a blu ray release, or there might not in the future. So you can bet your butt that I'm going to buy the dvd.

Oh, and for what it's worth, my marketing job for the day : Joe Bonamassa Live From The Royal Albert Hall trailer

Once you go blu, you'll never go back.

I compared a few DVD's and BD's and I must say that DVD's now just can't compare to BD.

Depends on the movie. I know I'm going against the grain on a blu-ray dedicated site, but there will be many movies that will not see the BD release for years and years. Just like when DVD began and VHS still had the market share.

I personally enjoy my home entertainment, so I still buy old DVD's, especially more obscure titles and foreign films, which I generally prefer over all the over hyped Hollywood crap. DVD's are pretty cheap if you shop around, especially online.

Lastly, I saw your gallery photos. Man, I thought I was the only one who liked 'The Oh in Ohio'. Funny movie.

Have you seen 'The House of Yes'?

My wife and I were walking into Target the other night and she made the comment that I blew right by a dvd endcap without even a glance. I'd say it's Blu all the way for me. There are more and more catalog titles released every month so it's just a matter of time when the movies you're looking for will be available.

Get the DVD if the Blu-ray isn't in sight. I bought a Pixar box set on DVD because who knows how long it will take for all of those films to be released on BD.
