Default Judd Apatow films a look back.

I am sort of a new fan of Judd Apatow. I love his movies for the hilarity and for the message in each one of them. I think his movies are unique, because like Martin Liebman says in his review of I Love You, Man, "Just when it seems Comedy has sunk to a painful and irrecoverable new low, the genre manages to pull one more trick out of its sleeve and surprise audiences with a fresh story that delivers plenty of honest, gut-busting laughs along the way." With Apatow's films we have fresh new comedy with a sort of honest and true-to-life message attached. In some circles the message may be mildly convicting; however, true to the point.

You cannot deny that within the past decade Apatow has had his name engraved in some the most off-the-wall yet undeniably funny comedies such as 'Zohan', 'Walk Hard', and 'Pineapple Express'. However, it is his directorial projects that seem to have the most profound impact on not only the genre, but also the industry. When Apatow got his start, he invested in a group of the, at the time, most unusual suspects consisting of Jason Segel, Seth Rogan, James Franco, and more when he created the series 'Freaks and Geeks'. The series was eventually canned after one season, however these kids eventually rose to fame through the Apatow written, produced, or directed in the time afterward.

Now it is time to hear your input: What is your favorite Judd Apatow film? The three listed above in the poll are only his directed films, he has contributed a lot to the comedies over the past few years especially with his talent for writing comedy.

He only directed one of those (the last one).

As long as he's associated with it, I think we should consider it.

Yeah, I've always been curious how big a role a producer like Apatow has in movies like Superbad or Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I think a big part is just getting the movie greenlit and one of his guys to star in it. Regardless, I like most of the movies he's associated with, although I thought Zohan was just awful and I've never had any desire to see Drillbit Taylor.

In order for a film to qualify as an Apatow-produced film, at least 75% of the film must be pertaining to the male reproductive system.

Nonetheless, any film with his name on it sells. Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of my favorite comedies, and he didn't even direct it.

For me, that is the ONLY director movie he did well in. I didn't like Knocked up nor Funny People. I know he didn't direct the others but he had a hand in them which I think lends to how the story is directed and shown.

In that case, my favorite is Superbad followed closely by Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

I disagree with that statement. You wouldn't call Transformers a Steven Spielberg movie would you? I wouldn't..

Probably not, but would you call Nightmare Before Christmas a Tim Burton movie?

Probably. Even though Burton didn't direct it and was "only" producer. Because the person who DID direct it went out of his way to make it look like a Burton film.

I have a hard time comparing Funny People to his other directed films though. Totally different style. They're all great though.

The only movie I like from him and I did laugh was 40 year old Virgin. I never found Knocked Up to be that funny while many people seem to like it. Zohan was funny but I would not see myself watching it again, unlike 40 year old Virgin.

It is hard to say how much Judd Apatow did in his producer role. He might have done more than Spielberg did or was allowed a lot more insight.

Speilberg was an excutive producer and as defined by Wikipedia:

Quote:
Executive producer: In major productions, usually a representative or CEO of the film studio - although the title may be given as an honorarium to a major investor - often oversees the financial, administrative and creative aspects of production, though not technical aspects. In smaller companies or independent projects, may be synonymous with creator/writer.
Apatwo might have more on hands work in his movies than Speilberg did in Transformers.

Well in most cases, producers names are use to generate interest on the movie specialy when they are known by the general public, like Steven Spielberg or Apatow. I wonder how much true input they have in the making of the movie.

Yeah, so far 40 Year Old Virgin and Sarah Marshall are the only Apatow movies I really liked. Knocked Up was good too, but Pineapple Express was unfunny and Superbad was just plain AWFUL. Maybe my expectations were too high for that one, but I didn't laugh once the whole movie. I kept thinking, "Not funny. What am I missing here?" Perhaps it's just my marijuana abstinence giving me an unfair bias.

One thing that annoys me at times is how he always casts the same people. What is really annoying me has to do with next year's Get Him to the Greek. This movie is a sequel to Forgetting Sarah Marshall following Russell Brand's Aldous Snow character. One of the main stars of the film is Jonah Hill, but he's playing a different character than the one he played in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. There are plenty of actors out there, they could have gotten an actor that wasn't in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

BTW... I never said we should call the movies in question "his", only that we should consider them among his repertoire.
