Question Onkyo HT-S3200, hook up advise

I ordered an Onkyo HT-S3200 HTiB last week (should be receiving it by the end of this week, hopefully) and I've been thinking on how I'm gonna hook it up. As you know, the HDMI for this system is video only and pass through. I figured I wouldn't need a receiver that decoded TruHD and any other HD formats because I have a PS3 and it's supposed to do that. My question is do I need to hook my PS3 into the HDMI port of the receiver since I'm going to have to use optical for sound anyway? It seems to me I can just plug my PS3 directly into my TV and use the optical for the surround. Is there any benefit of plugging my PS3 into the receiver then to my TV? Just seems like unnecessary wire clutter...

Should be fine if your tv has the extra hdmi slot available. As for optical audio out, Optical audio wont support the HD Audio codecs out only regular audio.

So in order to take advantage of the PS3's HD format decoding capabilites, I have to plug it into an HDMI slot on the receiver?

YuP Just set the video and audio as passthrough on the receiver and let the ps3 do the work

If the ps3 is hooked up to the receiver then the receiver sends the signal out to the tv.

So even if u have a samsung 850 series u would still recommend to go hdmi to the reciever instead? Would the picture be the same and with the automotion and all that stuff the 850 series offers??

Its depends on your personal preference. If your tv only has 1 available slot you can minimize with the reciever.

Oh I got u. Well obviously the 850 series has 4 hdmi's so its obvious to plug it there. let me ask u this? Should I run my optical from my reciever to the tv and whatever I am watching whther its directv or PS3 it will come out or should i run my PS3 to the reciever optical and the tv to coax on the reciever then only the PS3 would be optical and the rest like directv etc would come through tv coax?? what is your take??

According to the 850's manual, if you connect another device to the TV via HDMI, the TV's optical out will be only PCM 2.0. (My old Sammy CRT HDTV did that too; oddly enough, my present Vizio will pass bitstreams thru, at least if it's DD--haven't tested DTS.) So you'll need a separate optical (or digital coax) connection from every device that can output surround sound--TV, DirecTV, PS3, etc.--to your HTIB.

This is why I think it's a bad idea to get an HTIB (or AV receiver, for that matter) with pass-through HDMI ports; it's just stupid to have to run separate audio connections, especially when you have few optical inputs and there aren't many good optical switches on the market. It makes much more sense to get a receiver that can handle HDMI audio--not just to simplify connections, but also to get lossless audio from BDs & PS3 games that support it, even if your receiver doesn't have TrueHD & DTS-HD MA decoders (the PS3 has those already).

Oh ok I can dig that. Since i dont have alot of loot to spend and I am anxious now I am just probably gonna just go optical from my reciever directly to my 850 sammy and whatever the tv sees its what will play and disregard the coax as it is a lower output than optical. But i did some research on my RCA-RT2870 I bought and every review said the 1000-w reciever is great but the speakers that came with it suck. So either i need to get some better speakers or take the whole thing back and get a better system or I have an older home theater system from panasonic and I might just use those speaker with the RCA reciever as my older speaker are most likely better than the ones that came with my new home theater. The only thing is i want to keep that reciever I bought though so I am in a bind a little bit.

I have the same system. My tv has only 1 hdmi input, 1 optical, 2 component and like 4 composite. Plus it has 2 audio that says to audio source. I finally received an email from tech support at Onkyo and this is what they said....

Thank You for contacting Onkyo USA Product Support.

Ok here is the configuration that you should have going through the receiver:

Xbox 360- component video input 1 and Optical 1 put this on Aux
PS3- HDMI 2 and Optical 2 VCR/DVR
Direct Tv- HDMI 3 and coaxial (if the device has the coaxial connection) if not then it may have to be connected with the analog connections. Cable/Sat
DVD player - HDMI 1 and coaxial or analog connection. DVD

Now all the HDMI sources are going to be preassigned to the inputs that I have labeled. Now for the devices with the Component you would need to have the component video output from the receiver to tv so the signal is able to go out. Also you are saying that you are not getting a picture for the dvdplayer and that is hooked up with the HDMI so take a source and plug it into that input to see if you are able to get a picture out of that input

All works awesome now...and having the logitec 360 remote works all except the ps3 since the slim does not have an i/r input.

I wouldn't plug an Xbox 360 with component outputs into the receiver, personally. It'll try and upscale everything to 1080i instead of just outputting it, and you can select 720p or 1080p (depending on your set's capabilities) if you plug it directly into the set.

I had the 3100 system and was very happy with it. I am still using the speakers but upgraded the receiver recently.

One question/point, you mentioned earlier that you wanted to take advantage of the HD sound on blu rays by using the PS3 to decode and send to the receiver. This is what I do right now, however my receiver is capable of receiving LPCM, is the receiver that comes with this also able to do that? I looked online and couldn't really tell one way or another. I do know that my 3100 system could NOT do this....but movies still sounded awesome in DD or DTS!

Thanks

Oh, the one problem I see with your connections above, is that you have a 360.
