United Kingdom UK Blu-rays of Flags of our Fathers & Letters From Iwo Jima?

Is the UK Warners release of Letters From Iwo Jima the exact same version that was released in the US? I mainly want to know if the UK Blu-ray of Letters From Iwo Jima has the same lossless Japanese Dolby TrueHD track that's on the US disc?

My understanding is that other European countries got a different version of Letters from Iwo Jima from Warners, with lossy Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1 and various foreign language dubs on the disc as well. Did we get this version in the UK or the better US version with the Japanese Dolby TrueHD track?

Also has anyone done a picture quality comparison between the single disc UK Flags of our Fathers from Warners and the double disc Dreamworks release from the US?

Is the picture/compression quality of the US version noticeably better because the film is on a sepearte disc and there's no PCM track hogging the bandwith?

Also is it true that the PCM sound on the UK disc is 24bit/48khz at 6.9bps?

If true it's very unusual because Warner Bros only tend to encode PCM audio in 16bits.

According to the twin pack that i've noticed in HMV, one has a PCM track and the other has a TrueHD track. I can't remember which has which, but the net result is both are lossless!

Had posted screencaps of the disc cover and menu here.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flags-Father...dp/B000RF9YXW/

The Warner BD is VC-1 encoded at 18 Mbps featuring LPCM audio at 6.9 Mbps.
The Dreamworks BD is AVC encoded at 32 Mbps featuring DD audio at 640 Kbps.

Iwo Jima - Identical encodes.

Thanks for your replies kolibri and lgans316.

Have either of you bought the official UK version of Iwo Jima? Does it definitely have the Japanese Dolby TrueHD track? I don't really trust the info on the packaging as it's so often incorrect. The rest of Europe didn't get the Dolby TrueHD track apparently, why are we so special in the UK?

And for Igans316: Have you seen the US and UK Flags of our Fathers side by side? Is the picture/compression quality noticeably better on the US disc? Which version would you recommend? Is the difference in sound quality between both versions like night and day?

Cheers!

Sadly, I don't have either. I've been toying with getting the box set of both films - I notice Amazon UK are doing it for £18

The proper UK Blu-ray boxed set! For £12, new!?

Please open it soon and confirm the UK specs!

Oh btw Sky-Captain, I asked you a question I was hoping you could definitively answer about your UK copy of The Rules of Attraction, in the thread about the film lower down the page.

I have no plans to open the set for viewing, but ask away regarding any info I can give you from the rear covers. Yeah, £12 brand new and sealed, a last minute ebay win.

Regarding The Rules Of Attraction, I apologize, I swear blind that I did reply, unless some dirty fecking mod removed it or something daft... Anyhow, it's a very nice disc, completely uncut and incredibly film like. My only niggle was the skintones maybe being a tad too much on the red side, but that could just be my TV. Extras are quite possibly in PAL, film is in correct 1080p/24hz.

USA I'll be the guinea pig.

I too have been most interested in learning specifics about this 2-pack. I bought the two pack for play on a US BD player today. I will post specifics when it ships across the pond.

I have both UK BDs, opened. Flags of our Fathers has 1080p VC-1 video @ 23.976fps, with 5.1 lossless LCPM English audio. Letters... video is the same spec, with 5.1 Japanese Dolby TrueHD audio.

edit: also, those LPCM audio specs you asked about in the first post are correct.

What's the transfer on Flags like? The US release puts the movie on a separate disc, with lossy audio (the extras are on a separate disc). I was wondering whether the picture on the UK Flags suffered, because the film (with 24bit PCM sound!) is on a single disc, along with all the extras.

Are all the UK extras in HD?

The extras are 1080i @ 29.970fps. I don't remember much about the video quality now. I'll edit this post with some more info when I've had another look.

edit: from what I can see, the transfers look very similar, although the lower bitrate on the UK disk might mean that the compression is slightly more noticeable, especially in darker scenes. Or I might just be imagining things because I'm trying to see that.

Code:
Size: 28,482,220,032 bytes
Length: 2:11:53
Total Bitrate: 28.79 Mbps
Video: VC-1 Video / 18695 kbps / 1080p / 23.976 fps / 16:9 / Advanced Profile 3
Audio: English / LPCM Audio / 5.1 / 48 kHz / 6912 kbps / 24-bit
Bitrate graph.

Ta Matt.

Do you also own a copy of the US Blu-ray? Have you been able to compare them directly?

Do you know what the average video bitrate on the UK Flags is?

Thank you so much for your input btw, most people just wouldn't bother replying at all (let alone in the detail you have!), so ta muchly.

The 18695 kbps number is the avarage bitrate I believe. I don't have the US disc to compare it, I just browsed through the screenshots on this site and on a few others, so couldn't make an accurate comparison, although colours all looked similar.

Quite happy to reply, I know it can be hard to get hold of the right info.
