Default PS3 for storing music question.

Hi all,
I have a question in regards to ripping my CD's onto my PS3. I've done a few so far in MP3 format(so far so good). My question is approx how many CD's do you think I can put on it with a 500Gb HDD? I would love to do all my CD's and then box em up for storage.
Thanks in advance fo any info.

Here's how you do the math (more or less):

Size of HDD / Average Size of Song = # of Songs

Example:

500GB HDD / 3MB Song = 166,667 Songs

Of course you have to factor in how they are calculating GB (10-base versus binary) and also system disk space allocation but either way you are looking at easily 100k songs assuming you are storing nothing else. If you assume CDs have around 10 songs that is still 10k CDs.

Thanks guys. I figure right now I have almost 400Gb available. I probably won't do all my CD's. I'll probably do about 3-400 CD's at most of our favorite stuff. So going by what you guys are telling me, I think I'm gonna have plenty of space left for the gaming.
Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it.

Yeah for only 300-400 CDs you will have a ton of space left over.

looking at your gallery, you have a mac mini and i assume that you use itunes for you music and i am also assuming that you have a internet router. instead of using up hard drive space on your ps3 for music. you can download a program onto the mac that streams all your music, pictures, videos, ect. i have a ps3 and a imac and i like it...here is the link if you are interested

I've been using the PS3 Media server for over 6 months. Works great.
Really happy it converts flac files to wav on the fly. Really wish Sony would support Flac. I would probably put a 500gb drive in my PS3.

Thanks to everyone for all that great info. Over the last 4 days I have ripped approx 250 full CD's to the PS3. So farI have only used a few Gigs. As of now I have 375 Gb available so I will be able to do the rest of my CD's and still have a ton of space left. I was trying to track how much I used vs. how many I ripped. I checked one morning before I got started and I had 377 Gb available. After doing like 65-70 CD's it said I had 376 Gb available. I was amazed.

Also I may check out that Itunes thing. I mostly use the Mac Mini for surfing and checking e-mail, But may have to start using more of the features.

wow you guys have ALOT of songs!

The only thing I don't like about storing songs on the PS3 is that not all the song info always transfers and I'll have a hard time sorting everything out

I haven't had a problem with that. After I put in a CD, hit stop when it starts playing, hit Triangle button, then hit obtain CD information, wait for that to pop up and pick the one you want. It's usuall the title of the album. Then hit triangle again and go down and click "information", then you can add whatever you want. Piece of cake. Then you can sort by Album, artist, genre, date or all. I use all then play and shuffle.

Are you doing the songs in MP3 format? so far I have over 20,000 songs and have only used about 11gig give or take. Seems like that's a lot for the number of songs. I could be wrong though.

You can sample a few songs and view the file information to get an estimate of how much space each file is using then multiply by 20,000.

BTW I think all you guys are crazy I have like 20 songs on my PS3 =P

Yeah, I'm a little crazy for doing this because it's taking quite a bit of time. The thing is when I'm done I can box up my CD's and have more shelf space, then whenever I get a new CD I just rip it. I like having all the music on the hard drive. It's easier finding an album then looking through all the discs.

to be honest, i wouldve backed them up onto another external hard drive and streamed the music over the ps3... for me it just takes forever to copy to and from the ps3.

It only takes a few minutes per CD. I actually find it easier than doing it on our computer. Plus the wife has a little Sony MP3 player so she can pick whatever she wants off the PS3 and download to her hearts content.

thats true... i just uploaded my collection into itunes and like the way it sorts everything out... but it sounds like you have it set up pretty well too!

As of today I have about 450 total CD's burned onto the PS3. This is a fantastic feature which I highly recommend to anyone who has a large CD collection.
This has taken me about 2 weeks to do, so not too bad.
The next thing is getting with a buddy of mine and going through each others collection to see what each of us can borrow.
