Default New Sony blu ray player -S300

If your Tv Only goes up to 1080i is it still worth it to buy The new Sony blu-ray player?

I definitely think so. Our family room television is a 50" Pioneer Elite 1080p and we have had a PS3 down there since December as our Blu-ray/DVD player. And it is awesome.

This past Sunday I bought a BDP-S300 Blu-ray player for our bedroom (this to make my wife happy). In that room we have a 34" Sony direct view HDTV which is most definitely not a 1080p display. And I admit to being pleasantly surprised at how awesome blu-ray movies are on that television.

So 1080i? I'd say that was a no-brainer YES! Go for it.

Default indeed

its not just about the bd player you have to consider your connection tv size ,what you plan on doing with it in the future ,surround sound ,lots of things play into blu-ray player selection ,is 24fps important to you ,hdmi 1.3 it really depends on what you want to build

I just ordered the Sony S300 from CC today, and can't wait to receive it. I think we'll be using it on the home theater setup for now (50" SXRD), and maybe get a BD10A or a G3 player later and move the Sony to the bedroom TV (since we don't use surround sound in there).

But if you read the reviews on cNet, it seems the Sammy 1200 and the Sony 300 are about equal in terms of PQ and upconversion (slight edge to 1200). From what I understand, tho, the 1200 has better SQ and audio options.

Right now they do the exact same things. The bdp-s300 is said to be able to decode TrueHD & DTSHD at some point, but as of now only DD,DTS & DD+
Also has x.v. color.

The samsung's advantages right now are:

-Better DVD upscaling (best of any BD player to date)
-Ethernet jack for convenient fw. updating.
-HDMI 1.3 (no active bitstreaming of lossless audio as of now)

Yes.

I have a Sony KV-34XBR800 that is 1080i. The picture is awesome with my OTA Winegard, Directv HR20, and my PS3.

There is alot of mis-information when it comes to the difference between 1080i and 1080p. I can tell a slight bit of improvement in 1080p, but most people can't. Where you would really see any kind of visible improvement would be on large screens.

This is my opinion of course, but you will absolutely love the picture on your 1080i set.

I own The Samsung P1200, and to me, is by far the better one. I had the Sony S300 and I ended up returned it.

PQ and SQ is about the same for both players. But what set the Samsung apart from the Sony is the start up, and loading time, specially for the BD's that have the Java load. (i.e) the POTC discs. The Sony really struggles on these discs, taking as long as 2 1/2 minutes to load. The Samsung load these discs in about 45 seconds. (huge difference if you ask me).

Another issue with the Sony is the resume playback feature. If you power the unit off, there is no resume playback. The movie just starts off from the beginning, menus and all. The Samsung P1200 does have this feature, even if you power the unit off, and I heard that the Panny player also has this feature. Not having this feature on the S300, to me is a deal breaker.

Note: The resume playback feature does not work on any BD discs that requires the Java load on any players.

Holy, moly. Amazon is showing "usually ships in 1 to 2 months" for the BDP-S300s now. Between the Panny shortage and now this the Blu-ray player manufacturers way underestimated demand.

Oops, now it doesn't say that, it says there are two in stock. False alarm.

When you pause it for a while it automatically shuts off or "goes to sleep" and then when you come back and turn it on it resumes from where you left off. So the S300 does have that.

I love mine. It is cheaper than the Sammy. Right now the question is whether the load times are worth the extra $100? It might be for you. The Ethernet port isn't viable as of yet since nothing has been written to use it. Maybe a year from now.

The Sony S300 DOES NOT RESUME playback if the unit is turned off. The SAMSUNG DOES. That was my point.

Default Maybe I wasn't clear

I understand what you said but a workaround for that issue is just to pause the movie and if it turns off on it's own, it's fine since it will resume from where you left off. Calm down.

So if you pause a movie and let it turns off on it's own, does the unit powers off completely?
