16.mm was always the preferred film format as the BBC is public funded. cost
was important many of the spin off films used 35.mm. I don't think these classic shows will ever reach HD the time and money involved even if it was possible
to convert these shows to HD would be time consuming and very costly sadly
with the BBC having the largest film and television archive in the world and BBC
budgets already squeezed it just is not going to happen.

what's the future for these shows?
the BBC will more likely clean these TV shows up to the best of there ability and ring the last pound out of selling these on box sets. Xmas is always the best time to buy these they are nearly always inexpensive and cheap to produce. when DVD finally kicks the bucket and it will. digital downloads will be the future. already the UK broadcasters are archiving most of there classic shows and documentaries, project canvas aka iptv is set to launch 2010 with
most of the archive of the 3 main broadcasters planned to be available for streamed download and for the world there on-line services becoming digital shops for those around the world to buy or subscribe to

Very few of these will ever be on Blu-ray, or really benefit from it, for the simple reason that many were filmed entirely, or to a large extent, on SD video. Standard procedure seems to have been to do outdoor/location shoots on 16mm, and studio shoots on video. So even if they could rescan the film sections in high definition, the rest would still look as crappy as ever, so there would be little point to it all.
