very fun movie-- will probably look spectacular on blu-ray because of all the outtdoor settings and backdrops!

I really like this, but I don't know that I'll rush to upgrade to Blu-ray until and unless I hear really stellar reviews of the PQ given that the content is the same as the DVD release. For anyone who hasn't seen it or is looking for a family-friendly Blu-ray gift idea, I wholeheartedly recommend the movie.

When the heck is someone going to kick some sense into New Line? I've had to avoid every single one of their blu-ray releases because of bad DNR usage. Elf, The Wedding Singer, Dumb and Dumber, and now Secondhand Lions. It's 2009, isn't there someone over there that can clue them in?

What a shame. I really enjoyed this movie. I supposed I'll wait for this one to drop down 10 bucks or so then pick it up. If studios aren't going to put somewhat of an effort to release acceptable transfers then please don't even bother!

Agreed! Hopefully the bad reviews and lack of sales will inspire somebody over there to look at the bigger picture.

I was REALLY looking forward to buying this and am now considering not making my purchase. I might break down if it hits the sub 10 dollar mark.

They DNRD the heck out of this movie. What a shame. From KB's review:

Quote:
Slathered with enough DNR to route a small army, Secondhand Lions' 1080p/VC-1 encode bears a striking resemblance to the faulty, first generation Blu-ray transfers we've all come to know and loathe; a disappointment only compounded by frequent macroblocking, crush, occasionally severe smearing, persistent source noise, textureless faces and fabric, intrusive edge halos, and intermittent print damage. There are even a number of scenes in which McCanlies' gorgeous Texas skies are assaulted by vertical lines, swarms of artifacts, and squirrelly contrast wavering. At its worst, it's frankly enough to ruin the entire presentation. However, exterior shots seem to be the source of the most trouble. Interior sequences are far more acceptable, even if only marginally so.

In spite of the transfer (although I heard the director intended a soft focus and hazy look) I am loving this film more and more. Just such a great little coming of age story.

Hey, does anyone know if this has gone out of print? Major retailer availability seems like it's decreasing and amazon marketplace prices seem slightly inflated. If so I want to get it cheapish while I still can. It's still available on wbshop so I assume that's a good sign? Thanks

Also, on ebay I've seen listings for a blu-ray + dvd combo release which definitely seems OOP but the entry on the forum has it in preorder status for some reason
