Beavis and Butthead: The Sequel? Is it going to happen?

Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butt-Head and King of the Hill - and one of the most criminally underrated comedic geniuses on the planet - was recently doing press tour for his new film Extract, and was asked about the long-rumored, long-stalled, follow-up to the 1996 feature film, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.

Judge’s talk was purely speculative, but in my case it’s nonetheless fun to hear. I was in middle school / high school during the 90s, and to me, Beavis and Butt-Head were the ushers of my adolescence.

Well before I nearly laughed myself to death watching South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, I did in fact laugh myself to death in Beavis and Butt-Head Do America and had to be resuscitated.

According to what Mike Judge told WENN, he would either like to see our two favorite slackers return to the screen as dirty old men still doing what they do best: sitting on that couch and watching the boob tube.

“I kind of think of them as being either 15 or in their 60s…I wouldn’t mind doing something with them as these two dirty old men sitting on the couch…At one point I thought Butt-Head might do ok on some really low-level sales job…Beavis might be landscaping.”

Of course in the past Judge has also mentioned a (fleeting?) desire to do a live-action B&B, with the likes of Sean William Scott and Johnny Depp taking on the roles… Never can tell when that Mike Judge is trying to be funny.

Seriously though, let’s just toss out the live-action angle for a moment and focus on this second animated film. I say BY ALL MEANS NECESSARY THIS SHOULD HAPPEN. I love Mike Judge’s work and think it’s a CRIME that the man hasn’t earned more recognition for his consistently quality shows and films (he wrote and directed Office Space, people!). And since I don’t see a King of the Hill feature film ever getting made (though it probably should), and people don’t really seem to support Judge’s live-action films in the theater (see: Idiocracy), then if the only way the man can get a shot at another big box office payday is Beavis and Butt-Head, why not take the opportunity?

I am on the fence about how to do it, though. Judge’s idea about a middle-aged B&B film sounds like it could definitely be good material (especially if it’s a generational satire about gen x rockers living in a hipster/emo world), but if the primary audience is going to be 20-30 somethings that grew up on the original B&B MTV series from the 90s, then a simple film featuring our favorite slackers on another one of their hair-brained adventures would do just fine.

Either way, the next Beavis and Butt-Head film would certainly face the daunting task of addressing the current state and social practices of music video viewing. Not an easy task.

Right now this B&B film is just talk, but here’s hoping something develops.

So as far as we could tell the possibility of this happening is big. Lets cross our fingers.

Sept 1st:

BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD RETURN TO PROMOTE EXTRACT VIDEO

OK, that was weird. A serious wave of rare nostalgia just hit when I watched the first new Beavis and Butthead animation in, well, not really all that long. Looking around I see that Mike Judge’s animated duo have popped up on MTV now and again for the Music Video Awards and stuff like a Jackass marathon. But if you’re like me and tend to avoid most of what airs on MTV in the last decade this might be like a little trip down memory lane. Check out Beavis and Butthead shilling for Extract after the jump.

Mike Judge has called Beavis and Butthead his favorite creations, and that affection shows through in this clip. How could two morons be so endearing? (By not being quite as one-sidedly moronic as they first appear, as with so many Judge characters.) The idea here is that the pair are setting up a clip from Extract, in which Jason Bateman and wife Kristen Wiig have a tense little conversation about the quality of their new pool cleaner’s work.

That being the case, this is a spoilery clip, but only if you haven’t been watching and reading the other clips and interviews that have shown up to promote the film. If you’ve caught all that then there will be no real surprises. You’ll be able to safely enjoy the amazement expressed by Beavis at the fact that a movie featuring a chick with big boobs, a dude getting paid to have sex and some other stuff costs just the same as every other movie.

For what it’s worth, I liked Extract quite a bit, too. Perhaps my expectations had been lowered a bit (I’d heard some middling reactions over the last couple weeks) but I thought it was consistently funny and smart. Look for a review (either from me or Hunter; we both saw it) later in the week.

All I really see is hearsay... too bad, the ship may have sailed for them. I'd love to see another beavis & butthead movie though. Now that King is finally done, maybe it will happen.

Edit: Watched the video. I read some of the peoples replies about Beavis's voice being off and I think so to. The voice was a little low. It needed to be a little more higher pitched. But Judge hasn't done the voices in so long he might not be able to get it just right again. I can't even do the voices like I use to anymore.

you do know there was a little hint of sarcasm there.

as to the video I have the same issue with it. It didn't sound the same to me (I thought to myself its been a long time so it might be me) so thanks for bringing this up, I guess he really needs to work on this a little bit more.

Yes and I could see them as 60 year old people. It'll actually work if he can't get Beavis's voice back to the way it was.

I just want the missing episodes from the Mike Judge Collection. They put out 3 volumes saying its all the episodes but I know its not.
