United Kingdom Gladiator

Well the Uk edition of Gladiator is not out yet, but the US Sapphire Edition is kind of getting mixed reviews. The offical review on bluray.com gave it 3 stars out of 5 for video. And the public is giving mixed feedback, some say its not a good transfer, whilest others say its quite good. Im quite confused. Will the Uk be getting the same version with just different packaging? Or will we get a completely different transfer?

Same transfer. Universal apparently provided it to Paramount for the US release which is getting so much flack. Doesnt bode well I am afraid.

All the bad reviews & screen shots of missing arrows have made me cancel my pre order, I might grab it sometime in the future if it drops down to around £8. But hopefully paramount will re-release a new version soon instead.

It's a shame, as the Steelbook looked nice. Ah well.

I won't be paying £14.99 for any blu-ray that isn't getting superb reviews. So I have no intention of buying it, unfortunately.

whats annoying about this is that its a recent enough film.. if it was a film from the 80's like Star Trek IV you could understand that..

but something as high profile as Gladiator.. its a shame its not right.. maybe Univeral just wanted to screw paramount in the states.. and we'll get a magically spiffy release in Europe... although i think some have confirmed already that its the same image in all regions..

the extended cut is supposed to be watchable enough

i'm cancelling my preorder now. i simply won't pay good money for a substandard transfer. i won't buy until they re-release, which will be a few years away i'll bet. shame, i really wanted this.

I really hope the uk version is a better version. But from a couple of comments on here, it's more then likely to be the same version.

But im going to wait to see if a UK review appears first. I think i will still purchase the film, but only when the price drops down. As I love this film.

The bluray version surely must be better then the dvd version? Maybe just not to the standard of bluray people had wished.

i think where the blu-ray will blow the dvd away with is audio quality.. the DTS-Master Audio should be great, and perhaps if you have a smaller size screen like mine.. 40" or so.. it may look quite good.. maybe the quality issues only become really apparent on a larger type screen? i have had this in the past where titles that have been slated i thought looked grand on my tv..

Braveheart was released recently too, and that got a good review. And its from the same saphire range. I guess it comes down to the source of the film. Another film that got rubbished was robin hood prince of thieves.

Are the companies that release these top films, being a bit of a cheap skate and releasing sub standarded bluray films? Are they working with the DVD source? And not a new source from the original film? It would be interesting to find out.

Its not the source. The problem is that those who intervened and ruined it.

I'm going to rent it and decide on my own... Like the reviewer says... everyone will have their own opinion and they can be drastically different...

So far every review I've read that says they're the same transfer (with the same problems) appears to be based on hearsay and inference, rather than direct comparison or actual knowledge of the UK release. Can someone who has *actually* seen both BDs (US and UK) verify what's being said, or can someone point me to a reviewer who has *actually* seen both products and draws the relevant comparisons?

6.5 out of 10 for PQ isn't very good for a movie like this on blu-ray, it's not a must-have for me, but I would have been tempted if they quality was worth while, how could they let the quality dip so low on such an epic movie?

You can take it from me, the UK disc is an abomination.
