What kind of movies do you like?

Thats the the main question here.

I'd start by purchasing your favorites you have on DVD or VHS.

Most blu rays will look awesome if you have a decent tv and sound setup.

Movies you like, preferrably.

Some good titles that show off the capablities of Blu-Ray are Dark Knight, Valkyrie, Watchmen, Zodiac, Bond films, Kill Bill, King Kong, Hulk, Blade Runner, and 2001, to start with.

Like most of everyone has said, it's all about your personal preferences. Here's a list of some great starter Blu-rays:

Watchmen
Iron Man
The Dark Knight
I, Robot
I Am Legend
Blade Runner
The Departed
Wall-E
King Kong
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Pirates of the Caribbean movies
The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)
Speed Racer
Casino Royale
Quantum of Solace
Any James Bond Blu-ray that's out now
300 (either the original release with TrueHD/PCM audio or "The Complete Experience")
Cloverfield
The Matrix (You can either get the first film only, or the box set with all 3 movies)

I know there's a lot more than what I just mentioned here, but all these titles alone are definitely worth owning. Happy hunting, GoosePants!

Well with Afro Samurai: Ressurection it would have to be the fixed Dolby TrueHD version not the shipment which included only 5.1 Dolby Digital since Funimation screwed that one up.

Some of my recommendations include Origin: Spirits of the Past, Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid, Akira, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, Devil May Cry, Sword of the Stranger, and so on which are all awesome on Blu-ray.

2001: A Space Odyssey. This classic will really show you what the Blu-ray format can do with an old movie. It just looks amazing!!

And the movie is a must have as well, so this is a no-brainer really.

Enjoy your Blu-ray!

GoosePants

If you are looking for something not as mainstream, scifi....Checkout Sunshine. It's one of my favorite blu-rays. Very well done.

Which player did you get? Make sure you have the latest firmware or you may have some difficulties with newer movies freezing.

If you like classic movies get 'Great expectations'

If you like fantasy get 'Baron Munchausen'.It will come off really good on BD.Not the most detailed movie, but have a nice palette and black-level.Gives you a cinema feel which I can't explain.See for yourself.

If you like good movies which will shine on blue ray,get 'No country for old men'.

Or how about 'Transformers' if you like an action flick with laughs. It also shines on BD

'Good the bad and the ugly' will also get the wow factor if the only other source you've seen it is DVD/VHS.

2001 is a very good choice especially if you haven'r seen it before.Warning:No action film

Look at IMDB for moviereviews of films if you are not familiar with them before

And lastly:Congratulations. If you go for all the movies suggested here, quit your job
