Default PS3's new 3-D mode captured on video, coming in 2010

Interesting, coming to all existing games? That's impressive

You know what's absolutely useless? A video of Wipeout HD being played in 3D, with some schmuck wearing 3D glasses and babbling on about how much fun he's having. Well, that schmuck is this Engadget editor, the video can be found after the break, and we've gotta say: we loved it. Especially for something like Wipeout HD, whose neon-infused tracks make for an almost too convenient example of rapidly approaching vanishing points, we'd say 3D could really be a quasi-"killer app" for consoles going forward -- especially if those fancy new motion controllers don't catch on for Microsoft and Sony. In many ways, 3D just seems to make more sense in a video game than for a movie, and the whole problem of finding content to deliver in the format has already been solved: a software update for the PS3 sometime in 2010 will enable it to provide a 3D viewing experience to "all" existing games on the system. We're sure there will be some exceptions, but it sounds very promising. The console itself pumps out a quite regular signal over HDMI, which the TV syncs up with your 3D glasses. A 200Hz TV, for instance, alternates 1080p frames, with 100Hz for each eye. Of course, you'll need a brand new TV, but at least it won't be restricted to just Sony televisions. Start saving those pennies!

New TV needed? Hmmm...how convenient. This is going to have a hard time gaining traction with those of us who have recently spent $2,000+ (or more) on our new 1080P TVs.

From what I understand not everyone will have to buy a new tv. If you have a tv that is 240hz or more (new lcd and most plasmas over the last year) it should work. Like the article said it splits the 200hz into 2 100hz pictures. So if you have a 60hz lcd you would probably need a new one, and my RPTV probably wont work either.

good to see new technology coming into light with Current equipment, i still think it will be a fad, we all try it out on every game but at the end of the day its just not a standard

I don't see how possible that 3D is coming to all existing game... if the game is not design with 3D In mind I don't see much benefit of it?

It's only a couple of months since I bought my tv so have no plan to buy a new one for the next several years. Oh well, no 3D gaming for me then!

I bought my 120 Hz TV in January this year to go with the new house. 240 Hz TVs were in the early stages at that time and were significantly more expensive.

It seems you are correct in that those with 240+ Hz might be ok with their existing TVs, but given how recently the 240s debuted (and the still relatively high price-point), I would bet those owners are in the minority.

Its not that hard to implement. A few lines of code and its done.

All that needs to happen is to change the way the game is displayed on the TV. To the naked eye it will look blurry, put some glasses on and it will look 3D. Obviously if its BC with most games, its a routine that works for almost any game.

Wouln't they be able to do it with 120hz screens using 2 60hz framerates and a 4:3 pull down?

Can anyone identify that Sony tv in the pic? I'm sure its not one of the new "3D" models they will be releasing next year.

I know, but what I mean is that if you have 3d, is because there is stuff thrown at you or whatever, if they just put lets say lbp 3d... what will be the use? instead of having the picture in the tv, it will give the impression to be closer to me??? I can sit closer to for the same effect...

A lot can be accomplished with an update. Just look at how when Bioshock first came out for the PS3 and then the update which followed that upgraded the graphics drasticaly.

I always found the depth and layers in the picture more appealing than things popping out at me.

Games are already being rendered in 3D so it wouldn't be too hard to add depth to the image. And "true" 3D isn't about objects getting thrown at you for example your own sight which is in 3D do you use it to perceive depth or do you like having objects thrown at you so you can think "wow! I really feel like I am seeing in 3D!"

Just because I cant afford it right now, doesnt mean this isnt a great idea. Id love 3d gaming, even if i have to use glasses.

Some of you guys seem pretty petty with your "if I cant afford it, its stupid" mentality.

It's funny, because many blu-ray owners cry about people who cry about not being able to afford blu-ray players. What a bunch of whiners. 3-D is gonna be great.

Seriously, I hate 3D. Those ridiculous blue and red glasses (no matter what kind) give me crazy headaches after just a few minutes. I'll be passing on all of this.
