Does anyone know if there are extra charges for a delivery to Canada from Monoprice. My wife is freaking and holding up an order I want to place because she thinks that I'll be charged all these additional charges by customs on top of the regular shipping rate . If any Canadians have ordered from there before I would love to hear from you. Thanks alot

The short answer is - you MIGHT get hit with additional fees from customs.
It really depends on the total price of your order and your luck. I'm pretty sure that you're supposed to get charged on just about anything coming into the country with a value over $20. It's not usually worth the headache for them at low dollar values though, so I find that it's not usually until closer to $50 worth of goods that I get charged. As I mentioned though, luck comes into play too. I've had orders totalling as low as about $25 charged customs fees and as high as about $80 not. If you have it shipped through USPS though, the fees won't be outrageous. It's generally just tax + $5. It's really only UPS that charges absurd fees. |

There is a possibility but i have never been charged duties or any anything else other than shipping from MP. If you you choose the cheep shipping you have more of a chance getting charged at customs and expect 3 weeks or longer with that option. It's worth spending the extra money to get the expedited shipping to Canada and it only takes 2 to 3 days.

I ordered HDMI cables, RCA's, banana plugs, was a decent size order. I just had to pay the tax on them when I picked them up at the post office.
If they ship with USPS the customs charges are usually a part of the shipping cost, if you chose another shipping method like UPS or Fedex you're probably going to get dinged for customs. |

Because I work for the Post Office in Canada, I can clear up some of the reasons here. When someone orders something like cables or speaker wire, they will not get charged customs because the cables are made in the USA. Wall mounts and things like that, are made in other countries, and due to the wording in the Free Trade agreement, are taxable at the border. As long as the items you are buying are made in the US, you will be free from customs charges at the border.
To give an example, I've purchased plenty of cabling from Monoprice, as well as an HDMI switch, and I haven't been charged duty on any of it. I've also delivered plenty of Monoprice orders to people, and the only time I've seen charges is on wall mounts. If you do get charged anything extra, it would be minimal if you choose the USPS shipping option. The charges break down to GST/PST and a $5 customs brokerage charge. Compared to other shipping companies, this is by far the cheapest. Hope that clears things up for you. Last edited by Zman2k2; 09-07-2009 at 02:27 PM. Reason: Adding some info. |

Monoprice is in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Rancho is a few minutes away from the city of Ontario. Monoprice ships many of their goods from the airport or UPS in Ontario, California. The city of Ontario was named by two Canadian brothers. You can pretend that the the wires came from Ontario, Ca, meaning Ontario, Canada.

hey guys, ok UPS was just here with my delivery but I am brutal and didn't have the 11 dollars and some odd cents to cover the extra fees.I'll get my package tomorrow cause he is going to bring it to my work. He's there every day any way and I know him. So I just wanted to let you guys know that it was only 11 dollars extra for duty fees. Thanks.
Also I will be hanging my t.v. on the wall this weekend and also I have drastically changed the look of my room so I will be posting all new pics. Can't wait till you guys see it. Later |

Remembers me of someone who went to Burlington, On instead of Burlington, VT. On topic, my experience shipping Monoprice to Canada was really good... No duties or taxes (using USPS) on an order of 150$. It's slow but it eventually gets there. I also ordered from BJC with USPS and with FedEx and while FedEx will ship fast, it's really expensive... |
