Default The Quick and the Dead - 9/8/09

Love this oddball western by Sam Raimi and was considering buying it depending on whether it got good reviews. However DVD Verdict seems to think there is a gross overuse of grain on this transfer.

http://www.dvdverdict.com/reviews/quickdeadbd.php

Grain isn't a bad thing, but too much of it certainly can be. I'll wait for other reviews to confirm, but this isn't a great sign

I was horrified by the dvd verdict review!! This could/should look fantastic on blu-ray (westerns are always so bright and colorful with the
panoramic outdoor scenery)

hopefully the reviewer was exaggerating on the excessive grain....

I have seen this movie on HDNMV channel and it looks fantastic. I think this person who wrote the review is a DNR fan.

This is one of Sam Raimis best movies. Ill probably wait for the price to drop before I pick it up though.

Does anyone know if the is the internnational version like the UK DVD? The running time is different than the US DVD.

I think that in the international versions of the movie there was a sex scene between The Lady and Cort. That scene was cut out in the US version of the film.

Here's another review of the Blu-ray:

I've got the Superbit DVD of this and it looks so good upscaled that I don't know if this one is worth the upgrade or not.

For the sound alone I would say it should be.
I'll wait on a price drop, though.

No grain was added (the compressionist can’t do that anyway with his set-up).
You either like the creative choice of the principal photography or you don’t.

P.S.
If Minority Report ever makes it to Blu-ray and is essentially transparent to the HD master (given excellent mastering and encoding), then I suggest you do not buy it.
Creative choice by the filmmaker.

You can sand a boat with Quick and the Dead judging by my friend's copy I saw the other day I suggest you stay awy from any of Raimi's other non-Spider movies as well, because that's how they all look

One of my favorite modern westerns but it's gotta be under 20 bucks before I pick it up.

If $20 is your threshold for a catalog title, you won't have to wait for many.

In my experience, they only ever are any bad when they use an old transfer, and even then, the added resolution in Blu-ray still makes the Blu-ray edition with the same transfer better than the DVD edition.

I'd wager that this probably looks pretty good and the reviewer is one of those folks who hates when there is any grain present in the picture. And as long as the visible grain in the picture isn't due to using a late generation print far from the master (that is to say, the grain you see is from the master), visible grain shouldn't be a reason to stay away from a good film, especially a western of all genres.

I got mine from Amazon yesterday, and watched it last night. There is a good amount of grain, but I think this is the directors intent. I found the picture quality to be quite good and nicely detailed. I didn't notice any edge enhancement or halos. The really nice suprise for me was the audio quality was awesome. A great movie to show off your surround system....

Keep in mind though, I am not someone who minds grain in the picture. It's not as noticeable as 300 or Blackhawk Down, but it's noticable enough.

I have the UK Blu-ray (it looks and sounds great), and this is the uncut version with the sex scene in it. I know that the US DVD's are cut. Don't know about the Blu-ray though...

I second that! Any word on this being the same as the UK edition (uncut)?

The US version does not have the sex scene.

As for my brief review of the disc, I was pleasantly surprised w/ it. The so called excessive grain didn't bother me one bit and audio wise it was great.
